Sports Page 4 Equestrians Compete At Regionals by Staff Reporter The co-captains of Salem's Equestrian Team, Elizabeth Betts and Courtney Nanninga, participated in the Regional Finals of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association on April 19. The show was held at Virginia Interment College in Bristol, Virginia. Both riders currently compete in the Novice Equitation Division, but they competed in separate sections of the Advanced Walk-Trot-Canter Division at Regionals. Courtney and Elizabeth drew the same horse in the competition. Courtney placed sixth io the firct section, and Elizabeth placed seventh in the other. Salem's team, now in its fifth year, is coached by Lee Trotman of Cozy Fox Farm. Dansalems Present Spring Concert by Elizabeth Carmichael The Dansalems Spring Concert on Thursday night was a varied program including ballet, jazz , and modern choreography. Kelly Zappa, the Dansalems' President, choreographed most of the dances including the first number, "Tonight," and the final selection "Time Of My Life." Zappa used slides of the dancers to introduce the dance. Members of the dance company include Laura Arndt, Tolly Callaway, Elizabeth Carmichael, Mary-Alston Glenn, Paige Parker, Lynn Ransom, Jill Starling, Beth Williams and Kelly Zappa. Mrs. Nan Tilley is the company's faculty adviser. Ardnt, Parker, Williams, and Zappa each choreographed their own solos. Ardnt choreographed a character-type dance to Sandi Patti's "Face to Faith." Parker's contemporary ballet piece was choreographed to Barbara Streisand's "A New World." Williams danced to McLean's "Bye, Bye." Zappa performed a contemporary jazzy dance to "Bolero." The five seniors of the company , Ardnt, Carmichael, Ransom, Williams , and Zappa comment that they have enjoyed their involvement with Dansalems^ "I'm sad about leaving," said Zappa. "It went very fast." The company holds auditions for new members each fall. Try-out times will be posted this fall. Spring Fling by Katie Thomas Spring Fling was held Saturday, April 23 on the soccer field. Once again, the weather put a damper on the attendance. Two bands were featured. The Convertibles and Doug Clark and The Hot Nuts. The event lasted from one to six p.m. Food and drinks were available. According to Tammy Taylor, CAC chairman for next year, they experienced a few problems with the drinking policy. She said, "If problems continue, we may be forced to return to the drinking 'jail' or strictly BYOB." Although there was not a very large turn-out as expected, everyone seemed to have a good time. Mayberry's Becomes Casey's by Julia Carpenter A new restaurant has opened next to the Post Office. It is called Michael Casey’s of Old Salem. This restaurant features an upbeat image and a new menu. The menu includes twelve distinct food categories. They range from Eating Lite, a collection of dishes to help the dieter, to From the Border. featuring Mexican dishes. The menu offers a wide variety of dishes. The spiral french fries are especially delicious. Currently, the restaurant’s hours are; Monday-Saturday 7a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m.-9 p.m.. When the manager hires a full staff, the restaurant will stay open until 10 p.m. Monday-Saturday.
