Editorials Page 2 ^Editor's 9\(pte by Katie Thomas In thinking about my first editorial as your new editor of The Salemite. I tried to consider some of the ideas and suggestions that have been pouring in from a lot of you. The questionnaire we sent out received a big response. From all the input that I have gotten, I think that Salem is ready to actively participate in her newspaper. All I can say is: It’s about time! My feelings about a college newspaper is that it is one of the best tools Vv’e can use to communicate to each other, to the faculty, and to the administration. What better way to express our opinions than in writing? As it is said, "The pen is mightier than the sword." Not suggesting that instead of taking up arms we write in the newspaper, but instead of sitting around our rooms complaining about what we don't like about the system, let’s at least be heard. Another important outcome of a college publication is to express what we do like about Salem. With all the new changes that our student government works so hard for, the paper can be read to see how far we’ve come and how much we’ve changed. By looking at these aspects who can’t help but feel like our opinions and voice does make a difference? I would like to suggest to you what Lisa Councilman, a former SGA president suggested to my freshman class: Drain Salem for all she’s worth. Putting that in the context of the newspaper -squeeze every bit of print out of us. We have tried to develop new sections of the paper that will enable the voice of Salem to be heard in all realms! "The P.O. Box" is for your complaints, grievances, and questions; "Letter’s To The Editor" are for any comments; the classified section is for personal announcements, sales, ride information, employment, etc. We are always open for new suggestions and we would love to hear yours. This paper isn’t mine or just a few people’s-it’s every single student’s at Salem. Therefore that makes it every student’s responsibility to use it to its fullest extent. And taking everyone’s suggestions to heart I will cut this editorial off- I was told not to be a "wind-bag!" P.O. Box The Salemite*s Grievance Outlet I, Susie Salem, felt sick today. Just before dinner I stopped by the infirmary, but it was closed. I had forgotten that new hours are in effect this year, therefore, no one answered my weak tappings at the door. Seeking some sympathy from my friends, I proceeded to walk to the refectory. This probably was not a smart thing to do- germs spread quickly. I have more than likely infected the whole school with my cold. My friend, Sarah Soccerplayer, hurt her leg at the end of soccer practice today. She hobbled to the infirmary so that the nurse could check it, but alas, no one answered her frustrated poundings at the door. My other friend, Fanny Flubug, felt really sick today. She went to the infirmary. The nurse told her she had influenza # 217. She begged to be allowed to sleep in the infirmary for the night, but the nurse said that the infirmary closed at 4:30. Fanny struggled back to the dorm. She realized that she will probably be blamed for the start of an epidemic of influenza # 217. Signed, Sickened by the new infirmary hours. 0\[ptes ^rom Our President by Ginger Saunders Find someone who can help fight for your cause. One good place to begin is with your hall advisors and/ or dorm presidents; they can provide valuable information on residence hall and drinking policies. Also, if you convince these people your cause is worthwhile, you’ve added numbers to your side. Don’t forget about your student government officers either. Their whole purpose and reason for being officers is to respond to student concerns and affect change for the students. But it is nearly impossible for them to address your concern if they don’t know what you are concerned about or have questions with. If you cannot support your student government, then your student government cannot support you. Things do change at Salem. Clewell now has new furniture, the . .sfhp.4.ule. ,ha^,. Jjy.Qn .changed. administrators are listening and responding to the traditional/non-traditional student issue, options are being examined concerning parking fines, and a student commons committee is again meeting. All of these issues were sparked by students either by direct confrontation or persistent questioning. In conclusion let me leave you with one more thing to think about. The president of the college, members of the administrations, and professors on the faculty arc all here at Salem for one reason and one reason only- because there are students at Salem. With no students there is no presidents, there is no dean, and there is no Board of Trustees. If you have a question, ask. "1 can’t do anything to change what I don’t like about Salem," said Suzy Salem. Well, Suzy is wrong. Many complaints arc aired on this campus, and most people raise significant, valid question*; ~ cont:xm'pg: Efie SaCemite Salem College Winston-Salem, ^ 27108 (919)721-282$ 'Editor-in Cfiief l^sislant Editor 'Business Manager Sldvertising Manager Managing 'Editor Copy 'Editor Staff TiHters Staff EHotograpfieTS Sldvertising Staff CCass Espresentatives: Treshmen Sophomore Sunior Senior E^iielhomas SuGe Stone MarUtpTayCor ‘Karen Jordan SlmyCass ‘Bethildams 'Beth.
