Features Page 7 Long Distance Love by Alicia Boland I'm sitting on a plane, coming back from Bowling Green, Ohio. Yes, I missed Interclub, and yes, I hate to fly, but that is not my concern at the moment. I am basically worried about this long distance relationship. Throughout my high school and college years I have always dated a guy who cither goes to a boarding school, another college, or who lives in another country. Don't get me wrong, I love to travel and meet new people, but there have been so many times when I have said "Oh, I wish I went to his school" or "I wish he were here" or something to that effect. Gripe, gripe, gripe, yet through all of this I'm so glad that these wishes never came true!! Last fall I came to this conclusion. I had applied to a study abroad program in England and was accepted. This made me so happy, but at the same time I was very sad. Then, at the Christmas Dinner, Clark Thompson's prayer was something to the effect of "home is where the heart is." It all came to me that my home and heart are here, no matter where I go. Throughout England and in Bowling Green, people could never understand why I went to an all women's college. For me, it's something that becomes a part of me. I realized that what is most important are the friends and the independence that Salem offers to me. So what about these long distance relationships? I'll take them or leave them because the only real support and growth that I get comes from what I put my heart into-Salem. Clef Hangers leave Felicia Lamm hanging Your Responses by Kristie Reynolds Being at a women’s college, one of the experiences that most Salem women have at some linae or another is a long-distance relationship. Brom one point of view this lype of relationship can be a 'vonderful experience. It allows you to spend weekends and holidays in different cities, onjoying a break from the School enviroment and lots of romance. Another asset may be Ihat it allows you to spend the ^eeks with your friends exclusively and the weeker ds 'vith your beau exclusively. However, on the flip side of the coin, if your sweetheart is too far away, or can not commute for weekends, you have to live through lonely evenings, especially if you don't date others. Also, upkeeping the lines of communication in your relationship may prove difficult via AT&T. The Salemite asked you, the students, your opinions and found that the average Salem LDR (long distance romance) has lasted one year and four months. Although the number of you who date other people roughly equaled the numbers who do not. Oct. 15 Oct. 19 Oct. 22 Oct. 26 Nov. 5 Nov. 12 Sat. Urban Edge Schedule Duke -KZ Wed. Sat. Wed. Sat. Sat. It seems a lot of people’s mother's may not be too happy. Especially those who didn't make it to the dance for unknown and obvious reasons. Also those who didn’t stay on their feet all night, or didn't stay with their date all night (but with someone else's). It seems that some of us were in the mood for swimming while others went for smaller portions of water (with umbrellas). Other walls speaking on campus...the bus taken to Davidson last week seems to have come back with a lot of stories (for those of you who made it back!!). Somehow L.B. won the best story prize. Unfortunately, she doesn’t remember exactly what that was. Mmmmm? So Patsy, what can you tell us that the walls slept through in room #8? That’s what we'd like to know? Hey girls! It seems that even Patsy is trying to tell you something! Better watch out! Ya know it kills me how these girls can juggle so many guys at one time!!??!! For instance who is the squirt that runs home from one date just in time to get home for the next. Then we have another squirt who has decided on a frat she likes, she just can't decide between the two guys that she dates at Chapel Hill— bet you wonder who these girls are!! Tune in next issue to find out more secrets. If you would like to contribute some "dirt" on your friends be sure and submit it to the envelope in the Refectory before the next issue!
