Sports Tennis Team Begins Season page 11 by Jennifer King Thanks to some beautiful summer weather in the middle of winter on February 3, the 1989 tennis team ended their first practice session growing from the hard work-out and the sun's rays. The unusually warm weather was a positive sign for the beginning of a new tennis season. The team will stretch, run. February to be able to open the season with a win against Queens College on March 9. The season lasts until the end of April with the invitational Salem College Tournament on April 21 and 22 to bring a finale to the year. The team is strong this year with many returning juniors and sophomores. Coach McEwen is determined to get the team in shape, so when you see those tired tennis players at dinner 1989 Tennis Schedule 3/9 Thurs. at Queens 2:30 pm 3/14 Tues. at Greensboro 2:30 pm 3/16 Thurs. UNCCLUB 3:00 pm Spring Soccer Season by Beth Barksdale The Salem College soccer team opened its season Sunday, Febuary 12, with a game against Davidson College. Having only practiced three times as a team in preparation for the Wildcats, Salem was not destroyed by the defeat of three to six. While the first half of the game Was quite sloppy according to teammates, the Spirits showed vast improvement the final forty-five minutes. Considering the short trainning period, the score should not be a reflection of the teams adequacy. Both players and coach, Tony Butlin, feel that the season should be promising, as long as injury does rw>t prevail. The soccer team will be playing at least seven games this season, including teams from Duke, Wake Forest, and N.C. State Universities. The team’s record of 1-4 does not portray the effort being put forth by the club members. The one win came against Queens College in the tri-meet between Salem and Mary Baldwin College. The team has been hampered by injuries and by other students who have gone abroad. Last year's team was undefeated in their three meets. This year's schedule has been increased to seven meets and two new competitors: Randolph-Macon Woman's College and Mary Baldwin College. The club’s next two meets are Febuary 15 at 5:30pm here against Queens College and March 1 at Queens College. The Febuary 13 meet was canceled because of bad weather. It will be rescheduled for a later date. So please come out and be an "athletic supporter!"
