Salem Elects An Active Force
by April Edmondson
Spring is the time of year to think
about next year's leaders at Salem.
Each year many qualified students run
^or a number of leadership positions.
These include: SGA offices, CAC and
Big 3+3 Chairman and Vice-Chairman,
Interdorm and Honor Council
Chairman and Secretary, and April Arts
and Fall Fest Chairman. Each of these
offices require a minimum GPA of 2.0
for all major offices and 2.3 for all
absolute offices. The responsibilities
range from conducting meetings to
deciding some very important
elements of college life.
This year eight candidates are
running unopposed. These people are:
Diane Davis, SGA Secretary; Mary
Alston Glenn, SGA Treasurer; Page
Laughon, Honor Council Chairman;
Anne Tucker, Secretary of Interdorm;
Mindy McLarty, Campus Coordinator;
Jenny Savage, CAC Chairman; Camille
Plippin, Fall Fest Chairman; and
Christy Barley, April Arts Chairman.
Fortunately, each of these candidates
are well qualified and have the
ambition and leadership skills to
conduct their position quite effectively!
However, the remaining offices will
definately be a toss-up! For Big 3+3
Chairman there are three candidates.
Leigh Cubitt, who has been active on
the Tennis Team for three years, has
held the positions of Co-Chairman for
Fall Fest, Secretary/Treasurer of
Babcock, and Junior Class President.
She states, "since high school, I have
held secretarial positions, and as a
result I have learned to be organized
and accountable."
Jennifer Morgan, who is away
stud)ring at American University in
Washington, D.C. during this semester.
has stepped right in and is currently
using her leadership abilities to create
some social functions for American
University students. Jennifer promises,
if elected, to, "make next year one of
the best Salem has ever seen" socially.
Sue Ellen Crocker, who also
possesses the organizational skills and
qualification needed, states, "If elected
for this office, I will work diligently with
others to make the 1989-1990 school
year a fun and memorable one."
For Vice-Chairman of Big 3+3 the
candidates are: Libby Brown who
served as Co-Chairman for the
Sophomore/Senior Banquet, and Anu
Sharmu, who is currently serving as a
hall advisor.
Interdorm Chairman also has three
candidates nmning. Ironically, each of
these individuals are currently serving
as Dorm Presidents in Babcock,
Clewell, and Gramley. Their current
positions have enabled them to serve
on Interdorm Council this year.
Therefore, Heather Armstrong,
Michele Duffie, and Melissa Robinson
are all aware of the responsibility,
loyalty, and dedication that go along
with this position.
For secretary of Honor Council Susan
Yu and Amanda Jones are the
candidates. Both parties believe the
Honor System is an essential part of life
at Salem and that this trust enables us
to enhance our community.
Tammy Taylor, Sally Lemmon, and
Ashley Neill are running for
Vice-President. Tammy, who is
presently CAC Chairman, states, "I can
effectively communicate the needs and
wants of the students to the
administration."
Sally, who served as Gramley Dorm
President last year, states, "Salem is an
important part of my life and taking
part in the Student Government is an
open way of conveying my support of all
the goals achieved by Salem women.”
Ashley, who currently is serving as
Treasurer of SGA, states, "the entire
process of observing and partially
affecting change on this campus via
SGA Executive Board is extremely
rewarding."
And finally, the most important and
influential office that a student may
hold - the office of President of the
Student Government Association.
Heather Glasscock and Strat Newitt,
both influential forces on this campus
already, have the dedication and
enthusiasm to run this office very
efficiently.
Heather has served as a member of
the Soccer Team, Clewell dorm
Secretary/Treasurer, a member of
Omicron Delta Kappa, and SGA
Secretary. She states that if elected she
will, "continue to communicate
important information to the Salem
community through The Salemite, polls,
and special committees."
Strat Newitt, has been involved with
the Soccer and Field Hockey Teams,
Honor Council, the Drug Prevention
Committee, and Fall Fest. Strat states,
"I feel that I could be an effective liason
in expressing the concerns of the
students, faculty, and staff to one
another."
Writer’s note: By the time this article
is read, the Salem community will have
chosen her leaders for next year.
However, I hope those of you who don't
win, and indeed we can not be chosen
all of the time, will continue to be an
active force on campus and use your
abilities to enhance our community.

Paying Our Own Way
^ cnnrrpft nf inromp thev rereived. Ashlev comDleli^a hi?
The SGA budget increased by seven dollars this year. Last year students paid
$118 in SGA dues. Next year students will pay $125. I had a chance to discuss the
finer details of budget increases with SGA Treasurer Ashley Neill. I thought
students should understand why they pay higher SGA dues each year. I used to
think this was priviledged information, but all students have the right to know why
they pay SGA dues and why there are increases.
A student must pay her SGA dues if she wishes to be involved in any of the
various extra-curricular activities offered at Salem. Organizations on campus get
budget increases for various reasons. Big 3+3 received an increase in their
budget because the cost of bands has increased substantially since last year. The
Salemite received an increase because they have tripled the issues that have
come out this year compared to last year and increased the pages from the
average four of last year to twelve this year. Each club or organization sends a
completed budget study to Ashley Neill substantiating their costs and what
sources of income they received. Ashley compleli^'a history summary of each
budget to submit to the Executive Finance Board. The EFB is a student faculty
committee with a representative from each class and a representative from the
Off Campus Association. The EFB holds budget meetings to make sure that each
organization that has requested an increase can support their need for more
money.
A new procedure that began in 1897-88 was that SGA dues are itemized on our
tuition bill which has increased overall payment of dues. This has helped the
Student Government Association because they have more funds to work with at
the beginning of the year that need to be allocated to designated organizations.
Ashley Neill said, "The relative increase for certain organizations reflects the
increase in activity of the organization." Ashley also said, "I would like to thank all
the club presidents and treasurers for being cooperative and submitting their
budget studies on time." If you have any further questions about the budget any
member of SGA would be glad to answer them for you. Congratulations to Ashley
on a job well done and good luck next year to the next SGA Treasurer.
