Editor’s Notes: Tips for Success
by April Edmondson
Welcome to Salem! In the past
few days the freshmen have
undoubtedly been bombarded by
information about every ^^spect of
campus life. In this edition Amy
and I have tried to present you
with much of the same material. It
is our hope that you will keep this
issue close at hand and use it
throughout the year!
We have attempted to include
all the most important information,
however, there are some things you
learn from experience...these are
some of the most important lessons
to be learned at Salem College.
In reference to Katie Thomas'
editorial "Everything I've
Learned" appearing in the May 5,
1989 issue of The Salemite, I have
compiled this list of essentials:
-Don't drink if you are under 21.
In the event you can't help yourself
do not drive. Call a friend or the
hall phone. Someone will come and
get you.
-Don't lie, steal, or cheat. Don't
take items from the refectory and
stay off the grass!
-Attend classes on a regular basis
and learn to study in the library.
Don't procrastinate!
-Sometimes you have to wait on a
shower - yell "hot water" before
you flush.
-If you get in financial trouble see
Becky Pack-Moxley about an SGA
loan. If you still need money call
mom and dad.
-Don't be afraid to sing songs and
be loud, but respect quiet hours.
-Let Public Safety walk you home
Happiness Includes
Involvement
by Amy Cass
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the freshman class. Class
of 1993, to Salem. We are all excited that you have chosen Salem College to
spend the next several years. You are now here within this environment we
call home for nine months. This environment offers many moods. It is quite
obvious that you are living within a Moravian historical center, but yet it is
modernized in many ways. Although we live in very old buildings and study
in old buildings and walk beneath old trees, we are not lingering behind the
fast pace neoteric world outside our environment. We strive to keep up with
the huge universities. Even though we are a small group of women, we have
names and atypical faces. It won't be long before you know almost everyone's
name in your class or at least recognize their faces. Then as you attend your
classes (everyday) your professors will learn your name and not your social
security number. At meal times you'll sit down with your group of friends
and enjoy a break from your busy day and of course eat to your heart's content
without having to use a meal card. As you venture out for night life in
Winston-Salem you'll find several opportunites to take advantage of. But
it's comforting to know if you roadtrip to another college in the area, it's not
too far to come home and most importantly get away from the shuffle and
crowds of people. When you receive letters from hometown friends at othei
schools you won't read about their close relationships with their professors,
or how they got a day off from classes to participate in Fall Fest, or how
they expressed an interest in planning their school dances, or how they got a
big sister. My point is that Salem College is unique in every aspect. Salem
is here to help you in every possible way. You are able to become involved
in any activity or organization you desire. But the secret is to be willing
meet new people and participate. We are all here to help each other be the
most we can be. As a senior after spending almost four very short years here,
I recommend you to get your act together and get involved. Salem has too
much to offer. I encourage to you to be this atypical person within this
unique atmosphere, or before you know it your four years at your temporary
home will be over.
As you enter, we open the doors to many opportunities and invite you to
experience Salem's uniqueness.
We, SaCemite stafft would like to express our
sincere appreciation to Linda Therrell for her
assistance in helping us become more familiar with
computer mechanics. Thanks to her, we will be

after dark. Report the front door
being unlocked after hours.
Always keep the combination doors
shut.
-If you lose your SDH key report
if immediately to your RHD!
-Clean your room and wash your
laundry at least every three weeks.
Ask before you borrow something
and wash it before you return it.
-Sleep late if you can, but do not
abuse the snooze button.
-Take time to relax. Watch a
movie every once in a while; listen
to music every day! Make time to
sit and talk in the refectory after
dinner.
-Listen when people bang on their
plates. Respect the Moravian
blessing.
-Take care of yourself and your
friends. Remember that everyone
has bad days. Know when to be
supportive and when to leave them
alone.
-Occasionally, go out even though
you know you shouldn't. Don't
stand and wait on a guy too long and
NEVER expect him to call!
-Use the buddy system at all
times. It does not have to be every
person for herself. Keep in mind
that we all have blind spots and
help each other to see them.
-Never let too much get you down
for too long. Realize that
deadlines come and go.
But most importantly, take
advantage of Salem and of every
opportunity that comes your way-
For it is these opportunities that
will expand your horizons and
make you successful young women!
