Coach Mahaffey is originally from Statesvile and attended Appalachian State University with an athletic scholarship in basketball. When she was introduced to the game of field hockey, she knew that is where her heart belonged. While at Appalachian State, she participated in five national tournaments and currently holds the school record for most goals in a field hockey game. Coach Mahaffey then went to Colorado State University where she pursued her Ph.D. and assisted the field hockey team. After she answered a national ad for a new field hockey coach at Salem, she was welcomed with open arms. The first regulated home game was on Thursday, September 14 against Lynchburg under the leadership of seniors Casey Hoerner, Meredith Davies, Strat Newitt, Jen Cleere, Carol Romig, and Matilde Dumond. Coach Mahaffey describes the season's team as young and in need of learning fundamentals and game sense. With a new goalie, Jen Cleere, who has never played the game before, and the defensive leadership of Heather Inge and Katy Glenn, the season looks like a promising one. Coach Mahaffey is looking forward to working with the team and she encourages the student body to help support the team. We wish her luck for a successful season. Maybe by the end of the season the players will be calling her Cathy "never lose" Mahaffey. Support your college athletic teams and attend games to root the devoted Salem women to a successful season. Good LuckI
