Jim Wall, Physical Plant Supervisor,
was asked about the progress on the
dorm since the arrival of the new
contractor, but said that we needed to
memo Tom Macon for clearance
before he could discuss the situation.
The memo was sent on Friday 15, and
was not answered as of Monday 18.
When asked about the move-in date,
when you will be able to move into the
dorm, Beth Brown said that "...we have
officially been told it would be the end
of October, but realistically it will be
during January before we move in."
Some students feel inconvenienced
by the slow progress on the dormitory.
"...I hate living in a basement," says
- Karen Timmons, a senior living in
Gramley. "If they had closed it [Strong]
during the room drawing I could have
picked a different room on campus.
The room we picked out my roommate
will never get to live in."
Because of these dorm repairs,
Melissa Monnier, who is graduating in
December, will never get to enjoy the
new plumbing and electrical systems
she is paying the penalty for now.
Melissa, however, is optimistic about
her last semester. "I don't think it's all
that bad...we have a little community
down there. I think it brings us all
together." The only thing she has found
to be an inconvenience is "...having to
walk so far for everything!"
Though all of the Strong residents are
inconvenienced in one way or another,
Cathy Whitlock, Strong RHD, is not
living the life of a typical RHD. She is
currently living in a converted storage
closet that has no air circulation and no
phone hook-up due to wiring problems,
said Beth Brown.
When, Interdorm President,
Michelle Duffie was asked for her
feelings on the problems, other than
repairs, associated with Strong, she said
that "It is a shame because unification
does not only occur on campus but also
in the dorm itself . Because the
residents are spread out on campus it
makes the interdorm and house council
unification process very difficult. They
are trying to stay unified but it is
understandably hard."
continued from front page - communication
In interviewing Tom Macon, Chief Business Officer, Tom Litzenburg, Academy and
College President, Dean Johnson, Dean of Students, and Beth Brown, Strong
President, we found conflicting stories from each person.
Dean Johnson was asked "...has there been any communication between you and
the future residents of Strong dorm since their [the students'] arrival on campus?" She
said that she would memo the students if she was informed by Mr. Macon of any
changes. The last form of communication from the administration to the students was
sent on August 4, stating that the dorm should be open by October 30.
However, in an interview with The Salemite, earlier in the week Mr. Macon he said
that the completion date on the contract was November 30.
This constitutes a revision in the due date that Dean Johnson said she knew nothing
about. Apparently...Mr. Macon failed to inform Dean Johnson of the revised
completion date, and this resulted in her "failure to communicate" with the students.
According to Dean Johnson, the Dean of Students serves as the informational
pipeline between administration and students."! am the one who gets the memo
telling me the date has been changed. And I am the one that has to give the students
the good news."
Communication problems occur everywhere and Salem College is no exception.
There will always be a time when too much is said and always a time when not enough
is said.

Lots of special times were shared.
Everyday a school would give a
thought for the day. When Salem's
turn came up, we shared the tragedy
we faced on May 5,1989, the tornado.
Tears swelled in many of our eyes as
we remembered the storm. We did
not know how the other schools would
react to our story, but we were very
pleased to know that many people
were touched. That was a small
example of how people were very
open and kind.
We had great times laughing and
playing, but we knew when we had to
get serious. We were asked to think
of something we could do to improve
our campus. We decided Salem
lacks a great deal of communication.
Thus, we came up with the Toilet
Tabloid. It would consist of a schedule
of meetings and events, as well as,
SGA minutes to better inform the
students. These tabloids will be
placed in spots that everyone goes to,
the bathroom stalls. We hoped that
this would help us reach our goal for
better communication.
We learned a lot, and we had a
wonderful time. As the week came
close to an end, we all became sad.
One of the last nights we were there,
we had a talent show. We were quite
amused by the other schools and
enjoyed singing, dancing, and
showing that we do have fun. The
Salem team sang a remake of Jimmy
Buffet's "Volcano," filling in our own
words. Coach McEwen and Debbie
Harrell were a real hit as they shook
homemade moraccos, coffee cups
with M&M's inside.
The last night we were there, we
watched stars fall from the sky every
thirty minutes in a meteor shower.
We also watched a few of the guys fall
down Old Baldy trying to body sand
surf. It didn't work.
The morning we left was very sad.
We hugged our new friends goodbye
as we tried to hold back our tears. The
fun times were ending, and we were
leaving our fellow Miniwancians. The
drive home was even longer than the
trip up. We tried to release some of
our anxieties by dancing in the aisle,
singing songs, and reminiscing about
the past week. We still love to
reminisce about Miniwanca, and I
hope we never tire of the subject. It
was an experience that really taught
us a lot about ourselves and others
around us. The motto of the camp is:
"My own self at my very best all the
time."
Hey, guys - I still have sand in
some of my things! It takes forever to
get rid of.
