company, had auditions on Monday,
September 11, 1989. Although every
participant danced well, only three
positions were available due to the large
number of returning dancers.
Visitation to
Expand?
by Mindy Worrell
It is 1:15 on a Friday morning.
You have only been asleep for half
an hour and you are practically
comatose from the week-end's
activities. As your cozy bed lulls
you further away from reality, you
begin to dream about that cute guy
you met. Just as your mind creates
his face, you feel someone shake
your arm. Was it your imagination?
Sleepily, you pry open your eyes to
find your RHD peering over you
saying something about an accident
and Public Safety. You sit up, wide
awake, unable to comprehend that
the Public Safety vehicle hit your
car.
This is exactly what happened to
Melissa Murray when the Public
Safety vehicle lost its brakes going
down the hill towards the Pit.
According to Steve Wright, director
of Public Safety, the cable that
works the brakes apparently had a
nut missing. Without the nut, the
cable could not pull the brakes
when the driver stepped on them.
In an effort to avoid hitting some
students. Officer McCoy pulled into
the right hand lot and accidentally
hit Melissa's car in the first slot of
the second row. The impact was so
great that Melissa's car bumped
into the car next to it and ended up
perpendicular to where it had
originally been parked. This sent
the officer through the plexiglass
windshield, causing him to hit his
head on the safety vehicle.
Fortunately, a group of students saw
the accident and immediately used
the emergency phone to call the
main office and get an ambulance.
Due to the accident, there was
some damage done to bo^ vehicles.
The driver's side of Melissa's car is
dented in, causing damage to the
frame of her car. She added that
the car "barely started" when she
tried to move it. However, Salem
College's insurance will cover these
repairs. According to Steve Wright,
the golf cart is sporting a wrecked
steering wheel, two flat tires, and a
broken windshield. He added that
he was not sure whether Salem
College or the company that sold
the cart would pay for the damages
incurred.
Officer McCoy received ten
stitches in his head which were
supposed to come out last Thursday.
He also suffered from a swollen
knee which x-rays showed would
eventually be fine. Other than
that, Steve Wright believes he is
doing fine, though he still had not
reported to work as of September 9.
On a final note, Steve Wright
wanted to compliment the students
on the scene for their "level
headedness and quick response" in
calling for help. Because of them/
the ambulance was able to get to
the officer quickly.

Last year the Ad Hoc Visitation
Committee was created for the
purpose of carrying out the desires
of the majority of the student body
in regards to increasing male
visitation to 24 hours on three
dance weekends. These weekends
are Interclub, February Formal and
IRS. Presently, the committee is
working on a proposal that reflects
the concerns of last years
preliminary survey take during
SGA. Some of the general concerns
expressed were: violations of
privacy, security and Salem's
reputation. The Ad Hoc Visitation
Committee will do their best to
address all these issues in a
proposal which will be taken to
the Board of Trustees in late
October. The Board of Trustees will
have to approve this proposal
before it will become effective. The
committee members are Mindy
Worrell, Liz Smith, Michelle
Duffie, Sally Lemmon, Joanna May,
Mindy McLarty, Katy Glenn,
Melanie McRae, Anna Harris and
Debbie Bruce.

The New and Improved Refectory
by Caroline Swope A •'
Are )«)u one of the students who is
brave enough to emerge from the
pile of Domino's boxes in your room
and venture to the Refectory? If so,
then you have noticed the face lift
that the Refectory wing underwent
this summer. These changes came
about from both Salem and Epicure
wanting a presentable wing with
efficient equipment.
In the Spring of last year, funds
were made available and plans
were being drawn up. By August,
the equipment was installed and
waiting for our arrival. New ice
machines were bought that could
withstand heavy use. Cereal
dispensers were bought to help
clean up the clutter on the counters.
The peanut butter and jelly jars
finally found a home, as did the
lemons and the butter, which all
rest in a chilled counter.
A compact water dispenser now
takes the place of the old water
fountain, and the ice cream counter
has been moved across the room.
Perhaps one of the most noticable
transformations was the salad bar.
The Refectory undergoes a face lift
efficient equipment.
We have more dressings which are
now marked, so you don't have to
taste everything before you can tell
what it is. A cooler for beautiful
new glass salad plates has also
been installed. The selections on
the salad bar are also changing.

New menus are being drawn up
which include ideas for fruit, deli/
pasta and potato bars.
