She had wanted to move to Winston-Salem at that time; however, she was married which limited her opportunity to move. Now, Shirley is an RHD in Babcock Dormitory . Ms. Southerland returned to Winston-Salem to inquire for any openings on the campus and was pleased to find that an RHD was needed. She accepted the position feeling that her background in apartment management and experience in raising her own children would be an asset for the position. Ms. Southerland's children are also located in the area. When asked why she chose to be an RHD, Ms. Southerland said, "This will give me the opportunity to fill a need for somebody else and gain a lot of personal satisfaction myself.” Ms. Southerland views the task of getting to know each student in the dormitory as her biggest challenge. She is sending notes to all the freshmen to set up a time to meet with her in order to combat the challenge effectively. She will also be in touch with the other residents in Babcock so that she can get to know them too. Her favorite part of her job so far, besides helping others, was the ropes course at Guilford College where she and the Babcock House Council overcame the challenges of different activities. She said that the ropes course, "threw us together and almost forced us to establish trust and confidence in each other." When not busy with her RHD duties, Ms. Southerland sews and maintains correspondence with her family and friends both in her old home of Hickory and elsewhere. She also goes walking to keep fit. Ms. Southerland is busy trying to take in alt the sights and activities here in Winston-Salem. Ms. Southerland is enjoying her time here at Salem. She thinks that the staff and students at Salem are "a special kind of people.”
