page! Editorials Editors' Notes by April Edmondson and Patricia Earnhardt Recently, we have heard many opinions on what the newspaper’s purpose is. We have heard what people believe we. The Salemite staff, should and should not address. However, we are unclear as to who should address the issues that are supposedly not appropriate for The Salemite. When we accepted these positions, we promised that we would do our best to enhance and inform Salem College. It is the goal of this paper to report on as many pertinent issues as possible which concern the Salem community. And while we recognize our responsibility to the faculty, staff, and administration, we firmly believe that our first and most important responsibility is to the students. We believe the concerns of the students should not only be voiced and acknowledged, but also responded to in a respectful manner. We see no reason for any person on this campus to treat another with contempt or condescension, be they faculty, staff, administrator, or student. Such a response to the valid concerns of members of the community demonstrates a lack of respect which we at The Salemite find appalling. The faculty, staff, and administration, as well as this newspaper, are here to assist the students. This is not to say that all administrative doors are closed on a regular basis. However, some do seem to remain perpetually closed. We think we speak for a majority of the students when we say that we would like to feel that we are welcome to ask for the administration's cooperation in dealing with the problems which will inevitably arise in the college environment. Furthermore, we believe in upholdin all journalistic standards. Included in these standards lie objectivity, accuracy, and fairness - all of which are essential to the reliablitity of a respected newspaper. In short, we're here for the good of the women of Salem College. We think you should be, too. student in her everyday needs as well as her special needs (interests). When a student is reprimanded for taking up the time or "bashing" the administration we think something is wrong. In a campus as small as Salem it is essential that students and administrators work together in order to solve the problems and relieve the tensions which exist between them. It has always been our experience that the faculty has been more than happy to assist students in their needs. It seems ludicrous to us that the administrators of any college would not share the same concerns for the well-being of their We, The Salemite Staff, encourage our readers to feel free to write and voice your opinons concerning any campus issues. Thank you for your support! I, Susie Salem, want to issue a little warning. This weekend is one of those wonderful Salem dance weekends. We all like to have a good time. The problem arises when we have too much of a good time. Girls, PLEASE try to behave and don't make a fool of yourselves. We are extremely lucky to have been asked back to the Ramada, so let's not take advantage of this opportunity. And, we are not the only ones that should behave ourselves. Remember, we are responsible for the behavior of our dates. It is not fun to be the sober one that has to watch her friends make complete idiots of themselves. Our behavior is a direct reflection of Salem College and our correct behavior allows us to do many things. When we misbehave, however, we lose the opportunity to take part in things. As a senior, I have seen many girls do things at dances that they regret. You don't have to be drunk off your feet to have a good time (really, you don't!!). The dances are a lot of fun, so please behave in order to allow future Salem functions to be held off campus. by Amy Cass Once again I have a problem. I just don't understand people sometimes. Perhaps you can help me. I am sociology major and I thrive on people being happy and secure in their environment. Looking at society, I realize the many problems that overcome people. But one problem I cannot understand is stealing. This especially bothers me when it hits home. I'm speaking about Salem College campus and our "sisters" who become the victims. It’s a problem I cannot handle because I don't understand. After speaking with Steve Wright about the stealing situation that has occurred in Clewell and Babcock already this year, I became aware of the fact that this act has taken place in years past and will continue to happen. It will continue because people who have an addiction to stealing evidently have a problem. "I just need to 'borrow' this money from my friend this one time." Well, that is not necessarily the case in most situations. If they do it one time they will do again and then it becomes an addiction. My concern is for these people. I beg you to get help because it is there. If you feel uncomfortable going to an administrator, contact a friend. I'm sure she would be more than willing to listen. For the students who are trusting individuals like myself, take precautions so your valtjable and sentimental belongings don't end up missing. Public safety recommends only the obvious: don't leave money or jewelry laying out and always lock your door. You'll be sorry when you go to put on your favorite piece of jewelry and it's missing. In most cases, these items can be replaced but the sentimental value can never be replaced. I do understand that we all feel comfortable leaving our doors open (because of the Honor Code), but others at Salem feel comfortable just walking in and borrowing your personal property, for keeps. Unfortunately, we live in a society where theft is sometimes common place and dead bolts on doors are even more common. So, for those of us who are victims we need to turn the key when we leave. For those of us who have an addiction to walking through unlocked doors without a thought, try to start thinking before the glue gets to stiff. We all have feelings and some of the Salem "sisters" are beginning to feel cheated. 7he Sciiemtte Salem College Winston-Salem, Kortfv Carolina 27108 (919) 721-2825 Co-Ed itors-in Chief..
