Editors’ Notes
I by April Edmondson
Wednesday night, as Amy and I
were laying out the paper, we
experienced a very stressful
moment. Of course, with each issut
these incidents inevitably occur.
What happened? Our boards were
proofed and many errors were
found. The copy editors were
wonderful though. They sternly,-
yet patiently, told us that we had
neglected to have them read
several articles.
The following minutes were
strained! Amy had an intense
panic attack and I attempted to
maintain sanity by laughing at my
spastic friend and Co-Editor. I'm
sure you can "see" this event clearly
if you know Amy and me even in the
slightest way.
During the next three hours we
were fortunate enough to have
several wonderful friends come to
"check" on us and make sure we
would make it through the night.
As always, we worked together and
accomplished yet another issue!
I want to thank Karen, Susanne,
Kathryn, Patricia, Diane, Liver,
Jenny, Sasha, Swing, and Franklin.
You are the greatest! Indeed, this
issue would not be what it is had
each of you not been around!
I, Susie Salem, want to
congratulate Jenny Savage for
writing her editorial that
appeared in the last issue of The
Salemite.
Having been involved in several
organizations on campus, and
chairman of three, organizations I,
have seen the lack of responsibility
first hand. Many people are so
willing to get involved and to
volunteer. However, they often
fail to follow through with what
they've committed themselves to.
That is not fair to the group nor the'
chairman who winds up having to
do most of the work do herself.
And, on this campus as well as most
everywhere else- the group gets the
applause, but the chairman catches
the heat.
With elections coming up, please

All week I've struggled with a
topic I would tackle for this issues'
editorial. With my last Winter
Formal quickly approaching I
realized that I must write about yet
another special Salem tradition
that I will add to my memories.
With this exciting event
planned, I was determined that I
would attend, and it was for certain
that my friends would accompany
me. Therefore, "The Dating
Service" team, consisting of Ginny
Crable, Kim Lynch, Melissia Kirk,
Jenny Savage, and myself, was
formed to hunt down attractive,
eligible men for my few dateless
friends, who shall remain
anonymous. At approximately
11:30 p.m. Tuesday, we set out O-Pit
bound to find these fortunate men
By midnight, we had succeeded and
were ecstatic that everyone would
be together for yet another
memorable event.
The point I'm trying to express is
that my times here at Salem are
dwindling away. At this point, I
treasure our moments together! If
you are not planning to attend the
formal, think twice...because you
might regret not adding the
memories to your Salem years.
consider your schedule, grades, and
social life when deciding on
whether to petition and run for an
SGA office. These offices take a lot
of time, much more than anyone
probably realizes.
And, when you volunteer for
something PLEASE complete the
task you have volunteered for! Its
important for the group and
important for you. Members of the
group, especially the chairman,
will remember what you did (or
actually did not do!).
So remember ladies, once you
commit to something, follow
through with it. And, if something
comes up, by all means tell someone
that you need help. People are
more than willing to help if you just
ask for it.
A commitment is a promise!

LETTERS TO THE EDITORS
AND WE THANK YOU
FOR YOUR SUPPORT
Dear Editors,
On February 13th, Lynn White
officially introduced the student
body to the "Complete the
Tapestry" Project. Most students
are aware that this effort will
focus on the production of a quilt
panel in memory of Clark
Thompson to be included in the
AIDS Memorial Quilt.
Yet a recent incident has forced
me to view this project in a
different light. A fellow student
asked me if it was "a quilt honoring
gay people?" I was astounded at
the ignorance behind this question.
In fact, I almost bit her head off
AIDS is not a gay disease. It,
unlike people, does not
discriminate based on age, sex,
nationality, economic status, or
sexual preference.
The AIDS Memorial Quilt is
made by those who wish to honor
loved ones who have died of AIDS.
And there are thousands.
Unfortunately, one of our own has
been added to the AIDS statistics.
Dr. Clark Thompson was "our own"
and we were his.
"Complete the Tapestry" is a
perfect way for the students of this
community to show their love for
Clark.
Lynn White expressed it better
than I ever would be able to, "I
want to encourage everyone to
become involved in this project,
even freshman and sophomores.
You might not have known Dr.
Thompson, but surely you can
Editorials
appreciate his contributions to
Salem College. It doesn't matter if
you can sew or if you're a good
artist. That's not what this project
is about. This project is about us as
a student body working together
towards a common goal in honor of
someone who contributed a great
deal to the students at Salem
College. Dr. Clark Thompson gave
twenty-five years of his life to
Salem College. Pm asking
everyone here to give twenty-five
minutes of their time and
twenty-five cents of their money to
this project."
One would think that the
students of this college would be
eager to participate. Yet not one
individual has signed up to work on
the quilt from- either Babcock or
Gramley. I have a feeling it is the
same in the other dorms. No one
can spare twenty-five minutes?
That's the time it takes to watch
the Crosby Show or get frozen
yogurt!
There has been a lot of talk about
responsibility lately on this
campus. Is ANYONE really
listening? We have 3
responsibility to the ones we love
and to ourselves. Starting on
Monday, February 26th, work on
the panel will begin. The target
date for its completion is April
13th - Good Friday. Rather
appropriate, isn't it?
Sincerely/
' Karen Elsey
