Saxman Discusses
Goals for SGA
hy Virginia Crable
On March 28, the future 1990-91
Executive Board called the first
meeting. The meeting was
conducted by 1990-91 SGA
president, Betsy Saxman. "By
holding this meeting, I was able to
see how the officers interacted
with each other," said Saxman.
The plans for the meeting were also
to review the student handbook and
see if they could find any flaws in
it and think about correcting them.
Saxman says: "I want each officer
to choose a goal for themselves and
figure out what they want to
contribute to the student
government next year."
Saxman's biggest goal for next
year is to keep the lines of
comunications open between the
students and the administration. "I
feel that SGA's primary goal is to
take on the vital role as a mediator
between the students and the
administration."
When asked about what changes
she would like to make for next
year, Saxman said: "At this point I
haven’t thought about making
changes, I simply want to expand on
what is already in operation."
Saxman wants to hold more open
student forums like what the
1989-90 SGA did when Dean Cobb
resigned. She wants to expand upon
the student forum in such a way
that makes it easy for students to
voice their opinions or complaints.
"1 want to continue the open forums
because I don't feel like SGA
meetings are designed for open
discussion; they are more of an
informative meeting with little
time for discussion. Students need
the chance to express themselves
verbally," said Saxman.
Saxman comments on how pleased
she was with the present SGA
president, Strat Newitt, and her
achievement of "open
communication between the
students and the administration
and her constant unbiased position.
Strat made sure that everyone is
equally represented," says Saxman.
Saxman would like herself and
the SGA officers to become more
accessable and present themselves
in a personal way. "I want to be an
emotional supporter as well as a
leader. I want to get to know the
incoming freshman and be
non-discriminatory between the
classes."
"In my speech I said I was simple
and that I am not a lot of frills or
talk. I want to give something back
to the school - that is getting
student concerns pursued." When
asked what personal goals were
she answered, "to use Strat as a role
model to base my position on -1 am
a Strat wanna be, I like what she's
done!"
SACS Team Review
Visits Salem Campus
hy Patricia Earnhardt
When looking through our scrapbooks, it is quickly noticeable that almost
every picture has some image of Salem, whether it is the maintenance
building from the Freshman mixer, friends on the back porch of Main Hall or
a dorm room. Every ten years members of the Salem Community are
appointed to study and report on all aspects of life at the college. This, in
effect, is like a huge picture from a scrapbook.
The study helps prepare Salem for a larger study made by the Southern
Accreditation of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The self-study, completed by
members of the college began in Fall,1988 and will be concluded with the
visit of SACS representatives from April 16 - 20 of this year.
The self-study gives Salem insight as to changes that must be made for
reaccreditation by SACS. There are always changes that need to be made to
coincide with SACS’ rules. For example; for every major offered there must be
at least one full-time faculty member. To follow along with this, Salem is
conducting national searches for faculty in Interior Design and Arts
Management. (There are other searches being conducted at this time, but they
are for departments with current faculty).
Administration, faculty, staff and students have been involved in the
in-depth look at Salem. Committees have included Institutional
Effectiveness, Educational Program, Faculty, Library, Student Development,
Organization & Administration, Financial Resources and Physical Resources'

WKZL Apologizes
by April Edmondson
On Wednesday, March 7 a
Communications Panel Discussion
was presented by three area women
who are currently working in
careers such as radio, magazines,
and advertising. Due to an
unfortunate misunderstanding
between one of the panel members
and an instructor Wl^L made some
comments referring to Salem
College in a less than favorable
manner.
These comments were made
March 8 and 9 during the early
morning program with Hutch (in
the morning) and Tanya Bracken.
These comments offended many
Salem students, faculty, staff, and
administration.
Salem College and the instructor
demanded a retraction from the
General Manager of WKZL. On
March 14 they read this retraction,
"Last Thursday and Friday during
WKZL's morning show comments
were made in reference to Salem
College and our News Director's
presentation to a Communications
Classroom there. We are very sorry
these comments may have offended
faculty or students at Salem
College. It is not our policy to
attack any individual or any
institution. WKZL has enjoyed a
long association with Salem as
well as other institutions of higher
