Food For Thought A Dull Moment

When the Refectory announces broc
coli pizza it is time to take action.
Pick up the phone, call dominoes and
start working on the freshman 15 . It
really does happen and this is where
Salem women traditionally find their
late night food.
Mr. Butler's - for really unusual pizza
in a really unusual atmosphere, on
Peter's Creek Parkway towards the
Marketplace, they deliver 5:00 - 9:00
nightly, very inexpensive.
Mayberry's - easily the closest eadng
establishment off-campus (right beside
the Post Office), ice cream and sand
wiches, this year it will stay open until
10:00pm.
TJ s Deli - there's one downtown on
4th Street and one in Parkway Plaza,
great food, good prices (Parkway gives
a 10% discount to students and a free
meal with proof that it is your birth
day).
Mercantile Plaza - also located down
town on 4th Street (where the O Pit is),
it has international fast food, unfortu
nately it is not open late.
Dunkin' Donuts - donuts are cheap,
and you'll find the store open 24
hours.
Michael's - very elegant, very expen
sive, good for important special occa
sions, for example Parent's Weekend,
located downtown in a renovated man
sion.
Darryl's - in walking distance from
campus. It offers good food, decent
prices, and is excellent for a nice eve
ning out.
And there's always the Tom's ma
chine in the basement or a carepackage
down the hall.
Social life at Salem begins with you!
Everyone must get involved in the
mixers, dances, and events to make
them successes. Big 3+3 and CAC are
Salem's two organizations responsible
for planning and executing our social
occasions.
Big 3+3 is ready tor a great year and
is looking forward to everyone joining
the organization. Big 3+3 is a campus
group that plans and carries out an
nual social functions such as the Fresh
men Mixer, two other mixers, as well
as three dance weekends a year. The
membership is open and Big 3+3 is
always looking for new ideas. We en
courage any interested freshman to
Pa«-Pale.
Campus Activities Council, or CAC,
is a social council made up of CAC
officers, dorm representatives, hallrep-
resentatives, faculty advisor Debbie
Cates, and anyone else who would like
to join. CAC plans and organizes events
on campus as well as off campus. We
have two mixers a year, a mystery bus
mixer, and activities in the Refectory,
such as musicians and magicians. CAC
wants everyone to get involved and
help plan the social events.

Park It: Don’t Let Parking Drive You Crazy

Though walking from the far reaches
of the FAC parking lot may not be all
that fun, it is a parking place.
Salem students should count them
selves fortunate because as freshmen
they are allowed to have cars on cam
pus. Other campuses offer little to no
accommodations for freshmen cars.
The one exception to easy parking is
often finding a place to park. But as a
first hint to freshmen, don't park in the
wrong places.
If you are loading and unloading
your vehicle in the fire lane you must
have your flashers on. The key words
are loading and unloading - this does
not include people.
At no time is it permissible to park
on front campus, although you may
load and unload. It is also a parking
violation to park in the historical dis
trict.
It is illegal to park in:
-RHD parking areas
-Faculty/Staff parking areas
-Refectory parking areas
-handicapped parking areas
-loading zones
-reserved parking areas
-infirmary parking areas
-College vehicle parking areas
Public Safety is here for you. Give them a
call and they will walk you home. Emer
gency phones are located in both parking
lots. ^ °
As for fines, not many have changed
except for the cost of fire lane viola
tions. The fire lanes on campus now
carry a possible $50 penalty. Not only
does Public Safety have the authority
to write you a ticket for $25, but the
City can also issue you a citation for an
additional $25.
If a guest disobeys the traffic rules,
you are held responsible for their fines.
Overnight guests must register their
cars at no cost and park in the appro
priate location.
The Public Safety Department has a
few general requests and tips to keep
you safe and ticket free. Remember to
always turn on your flashers while
loading and unloading. If you are ar
riving on campus after dark, use the
emergency phones to call for an escort.
Just to be on the safe side - go in paifs
and always be alert!
But, most importantly, remember
that Public Safety isalwaysavailableto
assist you.
By following these simple rules,
will be able to keep you bank account
healthier and Public Safety happiu’'-
