OctoSer 12,1990 !Pa^e 9 Dr. Kelly Experiences India by ]. Robin Wibon Thanks to the Piedmont Independ ent Colleges Association (PICA) twelve professors from the Triad area were able to go to India for five weeks this summer. Our own Dr. Kelly from the religion department was one of the chosen professors to take the trip. The purpose of the trip was to show our teachers the prosperous side of India. They were able to learn about industry, government, the space pro gram, and the various Indian religions. For two weeks of the trip the group was lectured by professors of India's University of Poona on these subjects. To Dr. Kelly the trip was especially interesting because so much of the Indian culture deals with religion. He f xprossed his fascination with the many temples, varying in size from huge and elaborately detailed to small and closet sized. He explained that they were everywhere, cities, villages, homes, fields, and even in back comers of stores. In fact, he spent most of his free time in the villages photographing these temples. Dr. Kelly also remarked about the intrigue of the people of India. "They have such a wonderful flair for color, you see a lot of red and orange in India" he said. Even the horns of the cattle were painted; usually in fluores cent orange or red. PICA is thinking of working up a student group in the future so that students could have the same fun and educational opportunity. Let's hope they do! SGA Notes \y Angela Shotts The Salemite 2. Well, it seems to be that time of year, and once again the Salem Food Com mittee is in full swing. For those of you who do not know what the Food Committee is. I'll give you a brief ex planation. The Food Committee is a group of students selected from each dorm that meet twice a month to dis cuss changes that need to be made in the menu. We also negotiate with Epicure and the college on ideas for special dinners, and from time to time the committee members help prepare and serve meals when the campus is snowed in, and some of the staff are unable to come. Our meetings will be held every other Sunday night at 7:30 on the refectory. Our next meeting will be held on the 14th of October, and everyone is welcome to come and talk with us. This years project list is rather exten sive. The first is that a section of the refectory has now been designated non smoking. The first half of the refectory from the main doors that we use, up to the end of the food service line is now non-smoking. Please respect those that have requested this change, and smoke elsewhere in the refectory. Another project which is currently being worked on is the removal of sit-down dinners on the menu during the school week. The very structure of sit-down meals makes them very awkward on school nights, so the committee reque; ted thal on Tuesday and Thursday nights the serving line be used instead. We have also recommended that sit-down be moved to Sunday night for dinner. As soon as we receive any inform.ation regarding our request, I will let you know. The other two projects that we are currently working on are more vege tarian entrees and international movie/ dinner nights, which are being worked on jointly by the Food Committee and International Club. Within the next week I will be meeting with several vegetarians on campus discussing menus and some recipes from the food service director at School of the Arts, since the majority of their campus is vegetarian. If you have any sugges tions for vegetarian menus, please, call me or drop a note in the food sugges tion box in the refectory. My number is 773-0847. Well, that's all for this issue. I'll have more information for you in the next edition of the Salemite. Until then, 1 will see you in the refectory! TLC SWEATER WORLD 704 N. TRADE ST.
