January 9, 1947 BAILEY BUGLE BAILEY. NORTH CAROLINA Page 20 Learning To Do Earning To Live Doing To Learn^ f ^ Living To Serve 3oys Stress Corn Yield Per Acre Eleven members of the Bailey chapter of Future Farmers are carrying corn projects for 1946, averag ing 76.2 bushelig per acre. There were 21 acres of corn grown by the ag. boys^ producing a total of IfciOO bushels. Tv/o projects of six acres were planted with local seed and averaged 56.6 bushels per acre, and three-acre project of Jar vis Golcen Prolific made 180 bushels. All the other projects were K. D. T23 or Tenn. 10 hybrids. The lowest yield v/as 48 bushels and the highest, 115 bushels ■ per acre. The average planting date was April 15 and records show that corn planted in DEPTSHGLD BANQUET rows closer than four-feet and less then 16 to 18 in ches on the drill yielded heavier than four-foot rows. All projects were ferti lized reasonably heavy. Best yields v/ere obtained when at least 400 to 600 pounds of fertilizer v/as applied at planting and 400 to bOO pounds of high nitrogen top dressing, as soda or cal-nitro, was used. From records of the eleven projects it is found that to grov/ high yielding corn requires good adapted hybrid seed, medium early planting, enough stalks per acre, heavy fertilization, and no cultivation after it gets waist high.
