BAILEY BUGJ.E. RATIJEY. NORTH CAROLINA, MY SGnior Sporks BoiiBy teom—By coach l.e. pittman Team Rates High Owen Strickland, spark- minded senior, is respon sible for a large part in the improved fortune of the Bailey baseball team. His capable handling of pitchers, Reginald Broinin and Lamar Finch, has in creased their efficiency- and number of wins. Owen is typical of what Know YourTeorr] The spotlight brightly shines toward .two junior boys for their outstanding baseball playing ability. They are Lamar Finch and Junior Bass. ■ LAilAR FINCH—Lamar, pres ident of the junior class^ has been pitching for the Bailey baseball team for three years. Throughout this season he has won three games and lost one. Against Nashville High School, Lamar pitched a no hit game. This game is the only no hit game that has been played this year. Among other activities, Lamar is a three-year var sity basketball player, and a moviegoer, JUNIOR BASS—Vice-pres ident, basketball player, excellent baseball player, assistant school bus driv er, and movifjgoer are a few of the many things that keeps 'this junior well occupied, "Junior", states Coach L. E. Pittman,"is the only infielder of the team that hasn’t made an error this season." At the position of first base, he is usually seen backing the catcher, Owen Strickland, up under al most any circumstances. is recognized as the com petitive player in the baseball field. No chance is too great, and his team spirit and sparkling play sets a fine example for the other players. At bat,Owen is a consist ent "clutch" hitter. With, men on base he usually pro duces the necessary power, Owen’s one great weakness is trying to get an extra base out of every hit. So far he hasn't made one. He is the best high school catcher that I have ever seen. Only two men have stolen a base on Owen in six games. His throw to second is practically per fect. As the Bailey coach, iry one wish is that I had more players like Owen. The Sports Mirror "The pre-season survey of the baseball team revealed good pitching and catching, a fairly good infield, and a weak outfield. However, in one department only did the condition seem hope less" says Coach L, E, Pittman, The greatest wealaiess of several of the team mem bers was in the hitting. Two factors seemed to be involved, lack of know-hovj and lack of practice. The new activity peroid has aided the team and coach by giving the neces sary know-how and practice. Recent games have shown that the players are ra*» pidly developing as good hitters. The remaining weak hitters are forced to improve in order to stay in the lineup. Mr, Pittman reports, "The The Bailey baseball team has won five games and lost two during the season. Statistics reveal this to be a better record than in former years. infield and outfield play has improved; errors are becoming infrequent. Good from the beginning, the pitching and catching have improved, "All in all, I am sur prised, but not satisfied, with the progress made. I expect the players to con tinue to improve. I can say that the Bailey team has made more progress in less time than any of the other teams that I have coached," OE has all necessary supplies for the BASE BALL! Come in Todey! Wilson^ N.C.
