BAILEY BU3LE, BAILEY, NORTH CAROLIM. NOVE^ffiER Pa^e 2 Per Cent Attendooce Up; Number Students Down Seniors Writing Source Themes Meeting the request made by C. H. Fries, Jr., assistant superintendent of Nash County schools, that all senior English classes write a source theme, Bailey seniors are at work on a topic dealing with some phase of English literature up to the seventeenth century. Although this has not been made a yearly prac tice in Bailey, it has been done several times before. REQUIREIENTS All themes must contain an outline, a bibli ography, and footnotes. These, plus the theme, must be typewritten] and each student must write on a different subject, of which there vrere 35 from which to choose. This requirement gives senior students practice in doing reserach work, organizing material, and vrriting long detail ac counts. DEADLINES November 2I4, November 30, December 3, and • December 7, are the dates themes are due. These four dates were set aside so that the limited material would be available over a longer period and so that all themes would not have to be graded at one time. As a ’help to the students in writing these term papers, the class first had a unit on "Investi gating, Planning, and Writing," and each member vras assisted in deciding upon the desired purpose to be accomplished. Tape Recorder Helps To Improve VoIcg Improving one’s voice is being stressed in the English Classes as stu dents' voices are recorded, played back, and then in dividually criticized.. English teachers have pointed out that the use of the new tape recorder can help students improve their speaking and lis tening powers in many vfays: 1. Helps to detect grammatical errors and needed improvement in voice and modulation. 2. Gets one accustomed to a microphone. 3. Trains for future voca tions, practicularly radio and television. Ij. Lets one hear himself as others hear him. By detecting their errors, students can improve their speaking, teachers avow. School attendance headed upfward during the second month compared with last year's similar record, boasts M. ViT, Weaver, principal. He , added that the first month's at tendance was a "little un-r der" last year's, although the second month's was "much better." During the second month of school at Bailey there were mary absences, some of Y/hich were caused by sickness. Out of a total of 757 absences in the elementary grades in September, 26l of them were caused by illness. HIGH SCHOOL ABSENCES In high school there was a total of 323 absences, 21 caused by sickness. The per cent of at tendance in the entire school W3 5 91 with a total of 1,080 absences, lir. YJeaver reported that the number of students has dropped but the per cent of...attendance is up.
