April 5, 1935 GOLDSBORO HI NEWS Page Three TENNIS TOURNEY FINALS TOMORROW Net Champions To Be Crowned In Tournament FINALS TO TOMORROW Winners in Tourney, Sponsored By Tennis Club, Will Get Bronze Medals _ Boy and girl singles tennis cham pions of Goldsboro High will be (crowned in the finals of the net tournament, sponsored by the Ten nis Club, tomorrow on the Herman I’ark courts. Twenty-three students registered for competition. Only three girls, Margaret Denmark, Frances Mas sey, and Dot Ballard, registered. Each of the girls will play the other and the one having the highest per centage in the end will be the cham l»ion. I^ronze medals will be presented the winners through the courtesy of Scholastic, the JSTational High School W eekly. Pairings for the preliminaries were: Norborne Smith and James Heyward, Pat Witherington and Hily Griffin, Osborne Lee and George Monk, James Zealey and Billy Raney, Allen Andrews and Rupert Pate, Alec Jones and Dick Helms, Archie Monk and Richmond Smith, Cedric Cuddington and Claiborne Pate, Janies Crone and Lester Cud dington, Kenneth Cooke and James Bizzelle. S. will continue to play in Class A Confer ence athletic circles. They will. When officials are selecting schools to compete in Class play, they select the seyen schools in the east and west that hare tJie largest enrollment. Selections are not based on the scliooPs rating" in the association of accredited schools. H. S. students will enter tlie ^ortb Carolina Commer cial Contest to be held Wednesday and Thursday, April 17 and 18, iii high schools throughout the state. 'i'he following awards Avill be given to the winners; Loving Cups will be awarded to the winning typewriting teams of class A and B schools. Gold medals Avill be awarded to the winning teams of the class C schools. Winning shorthand teams will also be awarded loving cups. Gold and Silver Gregg medals will be awarded to the winning individuals. Loving cups and Gregg medals will be awarded to the winning ad vanced shorthand teams. Goldsboro High School will be entered with the class B. schools through out the state. ■R Memorial Community Building’s swimming pool will be the scene of much splashing as the -t irst Annual Open Swimming Meet gets under way Saturday afternoon and night, April 20. Charles Stapleton, swimming in structor at the pool, has urged high school boys and girls interested in swimming to fill in an entry blank and to attend the instruction periods Tuesday and Thursday nights. There are three classes open for and girls—^junior, intermediate, and senior. Intermediates are girls from 13 to IG and boys from 14 to 17, and the senors are girls 16 and over and boys 17 and over.
