December 18, 1936 GOLDSBORO HI NEWS PAGE THREE SUPPORT OUR BASKETBALL SQUADS 0 SEE OUR TEAMS IN ACTION TONIGHT Lady Basketeers Meet Grantham; Boys Engage Selma Here Tonight GHS Will Witness Its First Boy^s Basketball Team Since The W 1929 As King Football goes out of GHS in comes good old King Bas ketball to take its place. GHS opens its season tonight as the girls compete with Fremont and the boys clash with Selma in the Com munity Building at 7:00. GHS will see its first boys’ bas ketball on a gym floor since the year 1929. Out of the twenty-five boys reporting for the last three weeks, good material for a basket ball team has been found. Coaches Jeffrey and Johnson are instruct ing the team. The girls’ basketball team have the edge over the boys in basket- -.ball experience. They had a very successful season last year and they are expected to repeat. Sev eral big gaps in the line-up were made by graduation last spring, but these have been filled very well. Miss Langston and Miss Ezzel are coaching the team. GHS will have to put a good fight against Grantham and Fre mont tonight, and unless you are there to support them, they’re not going to do their best. The GHS girls will pace the floor tonight in brand new blue and white uniforms while the boys will contest in new blue uniforms. MEERY OHBISTMAS TRACK TALK Can you run? If so, Coach Lionel Weil, Jr., would like to see you in person. He wants more boys out for track, more than a mere handful. The track team has set a goal of 50 boys out for track, so let’s get behind this thing and show the track team just how fast we can shake a leg. After all, the success of the team depends upon you and no team can be a good one without material. Walker Barr, new sensational runner from Charlotte, hung up three fall track records on his wall as fall track practice ended last Friday. Walker now holds the new fall record of 10.6 seconds for the 100-yard dash, the record of 25 seconds flat for the 220-yard dash, and the record of 56.7 seconds for the 440-yard run. Being only a Sophomore, Walker ought to be a cracker jack in the future. Oh, These Sportsmen By RIDLEY WHITAKER Since a great number of young Daniel Boones are devoting a lot of their time to hunting we are go ing to use this column this month to tell you some of their ex periences. James Zealy went hunting a few days ago and while hunting he had to cross a creek. He crossed it but his dog wouldn’t, so he went back to get the dog. While doing so the dog leaped at him and James landed in the cold, cold creek. Lambert Jeniigan says he was out rabbit hunting with six other boys one day when suddenly a rab bit jumped up. All seven boys started blazing away, but none of them hit the target. Among the most ardent hunters of GHS are Billy Spicer, Ray Gardner, Charles Edgerton, Everett Proud, Ross Ward, Red Jernigan, Everett Proud, Ross Ward, Red Wynn, Dick Holt, Jim mie Weathers, and Joe Pearson. Blaney Mooring was out hunting the other day and thought he saw a rabbit and in his haste to shoot the rabbit killed his dog. (That tops them all). Joe Pearson says he and Dick Holt were out hunting one day around Neuse River and killed a couple of ducks. (Sounds ducky to me). In case any girls want to see anj^thing good looking, go out one afternoon and see the new blue sweat clothes the trackmen have. They’re cute and so are the boys in them. John St SMOKED HAMS Weight from 9 to 10 lbs. — 30c a lb. — During Christmas Holidays Bobby Hatch a very enthusiastic sports fan of GHS, seemed to have what it takes to win a pass to the 1937 Duke-Carolina football game. Bobby sent in his ballot for the first and second all-state football teams, sponsored by the Neivs and Observ er, and won. I’ll have to admit it, he’s smart. I wished he would have tipped me oif so I could have saved $2,50.
