Runners Enter Indoor Games Tomorrow
TANKTALK
A Raleigh High School swimming
outfit will seek retaliation of a re
cent GHS defeat when the two
teams splash in the Frank Thomp
son Gym in Raleigh tomorrow.
According to very close calcula
tion on the part of some swimming
enthusiasts, GHS is expected to re
peat its victory over the Haleigh
swimmers.
The GHS tank team got off to a
very commendable start this season
as they captured a 46-29 victory
over State College’s “B” team in
the Frank Thompson Gym, Febru
ary 5.
Three high school marks were flat
tened by the GHS swimmers. Britt
sliced .6 second off the state mark
of 1:17.9 in the 100-yard backstroke,
Captain Casey bettered the state 100-
yard breaststroke by swimming in
the time of 1:20.2 minutes as com
pared to 1:22.8 and the 150-yard
medley relay composed of Britt,
Captain Casey and Dawson took 4.2
seconds off the present time of
1:42.8.
GHS proved to be the superior in
her Raleigh meet, February 13,
splashing up a pleasing 45-21 score.
Besides the spectacular perform
ances of the GHS boys, Finch, of
Raleigh, moved into the water lights
as he clocked a 47-yard dash in 24.6
seconds. If Finch had been in a 50-
yard dash he would probably have
bettered the state time of 27 seconds
for this event.
Ernest Crone, seventh grader and
the present state diving champion,
has been ranked seventh of his kind
in the nation by the All-American
Swimming Guide. Having received
national recognition Ernest is ex
pected to go much further with his
diving talents. Nevertheless, he’s
GHS’ for four more years.
After the Tarboro Tigresses coast
ed to a 31-18 win over the local girls,
the GHS boys won handily 28-20,
to give the GHS basketball team an
even break in the doubleheader
])layed here February 2.
The GHS Earthquakes suffered a
basketball eruption from the Smith-
field boj^s by a score of 43-23, while
tlie Lady Quakes poured hot lava on
tlie Smithfield girls, whipping them
21-13, in the William Street Gym
nasium, February 12.
The Lady Quakes of GHS won a
thrilling 12-9 victory from the Wil
son lassies, while the boys lost a
heart breaking 28-25 decision in the
William Street Gymnasium, Febru
ary 9.
The GHS boy basketeers accepted
a 27-11 whipping from the Kinston
quint, while the GHS lassies were
walloped 17-7 on the opponents’
court, February 5.
GHS Takes On Kinston
In Basket Doubleheader
Here at 7:30 Tonight
Both GHS Teams Seek Retaliation
of Recent Defeats
The GHS boy basketeers and Lady
Quakes will clash with their arch
enemies, the Kinston teams, tonight
at 7:30 in the William Street Qym-
nasium.
The boys will try to avenge a 27-11
defeat handed them by the Kinston
quint on the latter’s ice-slick floor.
The probable starting lineup will
be: Pate and Hollo well forwards,
Hagan and McDowell guards and
Lawrence center.
The local sextet was also whipped
in Kinston and they also will be out
to get revenge for their 17-7 wallop
ing. The team will be without the
services of Rachel Sutton, regular
forward, who has recently been ill.
The starting lineup will come
from: Forwards—Adams, Shaver,
Waters, A. Johnson and N". Johnson.
Guards—Edmundson, Wooten, Sat
terfield, Flowers, Elks, and Slocumb.
The GHS teams will close their
season Tuesday night when they
mix with the Mount Olive courtsters
in Mount Olive.
ROCKY MOUNT OVERWHELMS
GHS BOYS TWICE, 24-14, 24-11
Rocky Mount’s fast moving Class
A court team whipped the GHS
quint 24-14 at the William Street
Gym February 19, and made it two
straight by handing them their sec
ond straight loss 24-11 in Rocky
Mount February 23.
In the February 19 game, the
visitors took an early lead and by
a 10 i^oint margin ])layed consistent
ly to win. GHS was without the
service of Hagan in this game.
In the February 23 game. Rocky
Mount again ruled the court, led by
A. Felton who scored six points.
Hollowell and McDowell with five
each, led Goldsboro. These defeats
brought the boys standings to Won
6, Lost 8.
In order to get a 500 per cent for
the year, the Quakes must win their
last two games.
The GHS basketeers made a nice
showing ill Tarboro, as the local sex
tet tied 10-10 and the Quakes eked
out an 8-7 win, February IG.
The GHS basketball teams suf
fered two defeats January 29, as the
boys took a 27-11 defeat from Wil
son, there, and the Lady Quakes were
edged out 16-13 in iTew Bern.

Coll it Training, Eh?
Coach Weil giving a few of his trackmen a little workout for the Indoor
Games. On the terrace from left to right are Franklin Spencer, Coach
Weil, Raeford Carter and Terry Pollock. Bottom of terrace are Walker
Barr, Dick Daughtry, Arlow Tripplet, Thomas Stith and Charles Boy
ette. Very front are Frank Farfour and Maylan McDonald. Notice our
star sprinters. Walker Barr and Dick Daughtry.
Oh, These Sportsmen
By RIDLEY WHITAKER
I don’t want to deceive you bowl
ing fans, so when you see those big
scores up in the bowling alley by
Whitaker don’t think it’s me. It’s
my brother.
I believe Coach Weil is finally get
ting into condition. I saw him run
around the track about 10 times a
few days ago. That’s a good sign.
Jabie stars again. He’s about the
best bowler in the “Alley Cats”
league. He is up on the score board
as bowling 125, which gives him the
title of champion of GHS.
Ah, tennis season is right around
the corner, so you would-be stars
had better start practice soon. Coach
Mahaffy says tiiat as sooii as the
weather settles, practice will start.
Dick Daughtry and Walker Barr
are certainly giving each other stiff'
competition. Barr has been able to
nose out Daughtry in the 100-yard
dash, but with a little more practice,
Dick should be able to run an even
closer race.
Speaking of spectators, I don’t
think I have ever seen any more
attentive ones than our own teams
when their opposite sex is playing
a game. If the girls on the visitors’
team are pretty the boys are very
attentive, while if the visiting boys
are handsome the girls are MOST
attentive. In science, unlike forces
attract. I guess it applies in this
case too.
