50 CENTS A YEAR
HISTORY of CLASS of ’39—Sy Margie Woaten
On Septomber 20, 1935, 271 very timid
and terribly friglitenod young people gatb-
orcd in the auditorium of Goldsboro Ifigli
School, together with some 502 others.
'I'liat 271, dear reader, was us. (. . . IJs
at that time being very green, raw fresh
men about to bo initiated into that great
fraternity of higher learning.) ITowover,
we started making history on that first
awful day. By this I mean that we 271
unhappy, looked - down-upon-by-the-rest,
unfortunate human beings happened to bo
the largest group of freshmen over to wan
der into the frightfully big auditorium of
GHS! But wo bravely struggled on under
the pressure of the upperclassmen and
elected Billy McClure as president. To
assist him were: vice president, Olivia
Ferguson; secretary, Frances Yelvorton;
treasurer. Bill Black; cheer leader, Caro
lyn Langston.
After the first week or two we all
learned not to wear anything colored
green, and it wasn’t quite so bad. Having
settled down to work, Ernest Glisson and
Carolyn Langston represented us in de
bating. The query was: Resolved that
GlIS should offer a course in the knowl
edge of driving and mechanical ])arts of a
car. Evidently we hadn’t had enough prac
tice, or we didn’t know enough about cars,
because the sophomores, upholding the af
firmative, defeated us.
Undaunted, wo sallied forth into the
world of sj)orts. We contributed five girls
to the basketball squad: Marjorie Sutton,
Ann Johnson, Virginia Parrish, Peggy
Simmons, and Margie Wooten. Then we
had three boys, Randy Middleton, Lewis
Tilgliinan, and Billy Hood, on the swim
ming team.
Two events came about that year that
concerned our high school. First of these
was the School Fair. This was the debut
of an event which repeated its success
the following year. The other event was
the vote for nine months of school. The
sup])lement having been ■])assod, Ave were
again placed on the list of accredited
schools.
After exams we breathed sighs of re
lief and abandoned school for the summer.
All good things must come to an end,
so on September 28, 1936, we again as
sembled in the auditorium. This year,
however, Ave had a more important air
around us. Therefore, Avith our groAvn-up
feelings draped around us like a cloak,
Ave 224 Silly Sophomores politely snubbed
the poor, trembling freshmen. We missed
our 47 members that we had lost some-
Avhere along the way, but we heroically
