October 25, 1940 GOLDSBORO HI N EWS PAGE THREE The Dope Bucket By Herbert Barbour Missing something? Of course you are. It’s Herman’s column. Since he has graduated, yours truly, this column’s new scribe, is going to try legitimate sporting dope and opinions through this column (that is until I’m fired. Gosh, I hope the boss ain’t reading this. It’s terrible.) Well, football is over half-way through and the Quakes are going full blast, losing one out of four games played thus far. A quick summary shows that the Quakes have won from Apex, Greenville, Washington, tied New Bern, and lost to Wilson. Even though the Quakes lost one of the most important games of the season to Wilson, it was one of the best and toughest games I have ever seen played. The Cyclones made the only score of the game when, with only three minutes to play, Captain Turner of the Cy clones kicked a field goal for three points. When the whistle blew a few seconds later ending the game, the Quakes were pretty heart-brok en. It was a very tired lot of play ers who came into the dressing room after the game. Some of the toughest players could not restrain a few tears. But the squad took it on the chin, gave no excuses for los ing, and gave credit where credit was due. I am proud as a GHS student to be represented by this squad, as they upheld the one law of sport kingdom even in the face of defeat — “Sportsmanship above Victory.” We Honor: This month we honor David “Shoeball” McClenny, and Coach Norris Jeffrey, head coach at GHS. The Quake you are to hear about now is none other than “Shoeball” McClenny, a senior and a versatile campus romeo, who hopes to take up a career of football at Guilford College after he leaves GHS. (Gad, I wonder if he’ll graduate or quitu- ate). McClenny has been one of the best offensive stars on the Quake squad thus far. “Shoeball’s” rush ing, blocking, and running, not to mention the defensive work, have broken up the morale of many good teams who have opposed the Quakes this fall. He held the center posi tion last year, but his smashing of the opposition’s lines merited him a chance in the backfield early in the season. So there he is, fighting for good old GHS. Coach Norris Jeffrey, head coach of GHS since 1936, is now coaching his fifth year for the Quakes. A coach must feel all the responsibili ties of team, both the business and coaching end, be ever on the alert for uncovered material, educate the team on the weaknesses of op posing teams, make up the plays, plan trips, arrange the schedule, and many other duties. Take a look at him on the bench when the team is behind. A struggle is always going on in his mind as to whether to take this man out or not, and just how we can win this game because we need it. When the team wins, the player or players get the glory, and if the team loses the coach gets the blame. It’s a tough life, and in view of your splendid record of coaching for the past four years, we salute you. Coach Jeffrey. Well, I won’t bother you again un til the next issue, but ’til then, re member this: More activity tickets must be sold in order that more stu dents may be at the games. As “ye old scribe,” I bid you so long, and I’ll see you at the game. OTIS A. Quake Tie Cyclones In Tough Game - Almost Held scoreless until the last three minutes, the Wilson Cyclones defeated the Earthquakes, 3-0 in a hard-fought battle under the lights at the Goldsboro Municipal Stadium, September 22. The score was made three min utes before the whistle blew by a field-goal by Co-Captain Turner of the Cyclones. After failing at two line bucks from the one-yard line, Turner then kicked the field goal for the only score of the game. At many times during the game, the Quakes threatened to score, only to be repulsed by the strong Wilson line. The punting of Derwood Bizzell of the Quakes and Billy Brooks of the Cyclones was the outstanding fea ture of the game. David McClenny’s smashing line bucks merited him offensive honors for the Quakes, while Sakos received the offensive honors for the Cyclones, Defensive stars for the Quakes were Derwood Bizzell and Bud Pate; for Wilson it was Herring. Quakes Win Opener Over Apex Yellow Jackefis Four touchdowns were scored by the GHS Earthquakes as they rolled over the Apex Yellow Jackets in the season opener by a score of 25-0, September 20, at the Goldsboro Ball Park. Coach Norris Jeffrey used all of his twenty-two Earthquakes and also gave the Junior team a trial as they ploughed for thirteen first downs, playing a ground game. Apex’s Coach Ellis Murchison used twenty boys who made five first downs but who took to the air in effectively. David McClenny scored two touch downs on line plunges, and Earl Howell made the third score on a line buck. Frank Ormond com pleted a forty-yard pass to Brinkley Taylor for the final tally of the night in the third quarter. HELP MAKE ^ THE HIGHWAYS SAFE! Time for one play remained, and David Mc Clenny attempted a center rush but was repulsed and the game ended. Both teams constantly threatened to score in the first half, and the game was featured by the superb kicking by Fulcher of the Bears and Bizzell of the Quakes. McClenny and Ormond stood out on offense for the Quakes, while Derwood Bizzel and Russel Single ton starred for the Quakes’ defense Fulcher starred on offense for the Bears. A GOOD PLACE TO EAT CENTRAL LUNCH ShoebalTs Touchdown Defeats Greenville The Greenville Phantoms were turned back by the Earthquakes in Goldsboro’s first Northeastern Conference game, 6-0 Friday night, October 4. David “Shoeball” McClenny scor ed in the last quarter by an off- tackle run from the one-yard line. The Earthquakes made 11 first downs to the Phantoms’ one and gained 136 yards to Greenville’s 13 yards. While the Quakes made 120 yards net gain, the Phantoms had a net loss of 34 yards. A pass from Ormond intended for Taylor was intercepted by a Phan tom pla3^er, keeping the Quakes from scoring again in the last quar ter. Line playing of both teams was especially good throughout the game with hard blocking and good defensive plays. Defensive honors went to Derwood Bizzell and Bud Pate of the Quakes, while Frank Ormond and David McClenny re ceived offensive honors. Coach Hilton Has Big Plans For School Track Team Coach .]. T. Hilton, new GHS track coach, has stated that the 1941 track team will start anew and that every boy that reports will get a chance to be on the team. Coach Hilton hopes to have at least three men for each event. If any good material is found, the team may go to the State Indoor Track Meet in Chapel Hill. Russell Johnson, practicing for cross-country, is the only student now working out for track. One more game (with Roanoke Rapids on November 1) will be play ed here. BANK WITH YOUR HOME BANK THE BANK of WAYNE 0HS Seeks Advantage Over Tarboro Tonight Seeking their third conference win of the season, the Earthquakes will invade Tarboro tonight. The game promises to be an ex citing one, since the disappointing tie of Friday night’s game with New Bern will probably spur the Golds boro boys on. In recent games the Quakes have stood out on their de fensive game; however, they have shown practically no offensive power. Recently the passing has be gun to click, but pass defense is as yet a little weak. Goldsboro’s power tonight will lie in their excellent defense, straight line plays with “Shoeball” McClen ny packing the leather, and in the recently clicking pass attack. Their weakness is their inconsistent field blocking and generally slow offense. With the breaks favoring them, the Earthquakes probably will repeat last year’s performance with vic tory by a touchdown—or possibly two. Pam-Packs Trampled By Rumbling Earthquakes Goldsboro’s Earthquakes defeated the Pam-Pack of Washington High School, 26-6 on Friday night, Octo ber 11, for the squad’s second con ference win of the season. Scores were made in the first, second, and fourth quarters by Frank Ormond, Charles Weathers, and “Shoeball” McClenny. Ormond made the first score on an end run from the Pani-Pack’s three-yard line where the ball was placed after a blocked punt by Bizzell and by McClenny in the hrst quarter. Kick-off return of 86 yards after Washington scored in the second quarter was good for a thir down, which was featured by su perb blocking of the entire Quake squad. All conversions were booted by Derwood Bizzell. The lone score for Washington was made by Fowl, who took the ball through the line from the Quakes after the Pam-Packs had completed a 63-yard pass.
