October 25, 1940 GOLDSBORO HI N EWS PAGE FIVE What You Don^t Know About Your Class Officers HART After two weeks of 'political activ ities—campaigning, smiling, speak ing, and voting, you have picked your class officers. Do you know their hobbies, pas- ti7ries, ambitions, weaknesses, and everything that is important? If not, ivhy not read this page? Inquir ing reporters gleaned this informa tion for your enlightenment: PARKER EDWARDS POWELL HART LOFTIN JEFFREYS BLAND COBB LILES • What’s your opinion of women’s hats? The Senior president, Kirby Thompson Hart, thinks they’re pretty awful. He thinks that part of the opposite sex is swell, but the other part—well we won’t go into that. Since his favorite sport is ten nis, we can understand his hearty appetite. o Ever heard of Suttontown in Sampson County? Neither have I, but that’s where Norris Sutton, Se nior vice president was born. He just loves to talk things over with his pals, but hates fast music. He thinks some girls are all right, so we can see why his hobby is photo graphy. • Isn’t it strange that Marie Lucile Belk plans to keep minutes while acting as Secretary of the Senior Class? I’ve never heard of such a thing, but you understand how some people are. We all know that her weakness is clothes, as she has such a lovely wardrobe. • Collecting Petty Girls seems to be the hobby of John Howard Fai son, treasurer of the Seniors, and to be principal of the school would suit him fine. And of course he likes to dance, as it brings him closer to the opposite sex. • “I think some boys are very amusing,” states the Junior presi dent, Fanny Lou Parker. Sissy boys seem to be her pet hate. Of course, her weakness is sweets, but who’s isn’t? • Oysters, flirts, and slouchy cloth es are three things that Barbara Ed wards, Junior vice president, just can’t stand. Why she doesn’t even A. M. SHERARD ► CASH MARKET ^ WILLIAMS PAINT fir SUPPLY CO. ► Pittsburgh Paints ► Wallpaper ► Garden & Lawn Seeds PHONE 496 Again We Greet You LATER WE WILL TALK SHOES PARROTT'S SHOE STORE like to eat sometimes. She surely is iifferent from me. As most girls, she loves anything red. • Eating appears to be the pas time of the Junior secretary, Vir ginia Jernigan. She seems to have trouble (as I), as her weakness is blushing. She would love to be re cording secretary of the SA, and we all know she would be swell. • What do you think of scouting and photography? The Junior treas urer, Bob Powell, thinks they are grand, as they are his hobby and pastime. His weakness is women, and he simply cannot bear conceit ed people. • Just think! The President of the Sophomores, Conway Rose, chose as his pet hate, girls. He doesn’t even like blonds or brunettes. Could he like red heads? Who knows? But anyhow, he is just wild about being a doctor like his dad, and the only person he would like to meet is a doctor in another state. ® Ned Hart (what, another Hart?), vice president of the Sophomore Class, hates stuck-up girls, and his opinion of girls in general is not so hot. His weakness is money, and he enjoys going to movies very much. Like his brother, Ned is wild about tennis, and plays it all of his spare time. • Fourteen years ago Dorothy Lof- tin, present secretary of the Sopho mores, was born at the Spicer Sani- torium. Now, the girl wants to be a great actress, and hates home work like the rest of us. She loves to read, as she can see what she reads; jt’s just like seeing a play to her, she says. She is always collecting his pictures, and her weakness is Gable. If she could meet one person, it would be Gable. Her pastime is go ing to shows, and I bet the shows star Clark, too. o It seems that the Freshman pres ident, Ralph Bland, is taking Latin. He says that his weakness is the feminine gender—females if you don’t understand, either. Still his pet hates are certain kinds of girls, and having nothing to do. There will be another ambitious doctor in our midst when Ralph gets a little older. ® What do you think of Hedy La marr? Jack Cobb, vice president of the Freshmen, thinks she’s swell and has lots of oomph. As we all know, his pastime is riding his horse. He really enjoys dancing with the right person, but the others . His weakness is the opposite sex. ® Do you know a girl in GHS that will have nothing to do with boys? Well, there is one, and it’s Mere dith Liles, secretary of the Fresh man Class. She just doesn’t seem to enjoy them; she hates boys who flirt and we know of no boy who doesn’t. Like her sisters, Meredith is crazy about basketball, and she plans to do things on the court. • We have finally found another girl with the same weakness as ours, day-dreaming in class. Strange as it may seem, it’s Hilda Blalock, Freshman treasurer. She wants to travel lots, but doesn’t want to eat spinach while going. She enjoys reading, dancing, and bicycling, along with eating and sleeping. —S. S., ’41; L. S., ’42. FOR FINEST QUALITY AT LOWEST PRICES Shop at The W. T. GRANT STORE 5c TO J5.00 DEPT. STORE 115 W. WALNUT STREET See EFIRD'S for NEW AND DURABLE SCHOOL CLOTHES BLALOCK ^%dispensable^^ Born in a log cabin in the wilder ness of New York state was a man destined to lead American human ity. Mamma labored day and night to keep her son from monopolizing public offices before he reached the age of 12. It was only through his pacifist nature (inherited from his Cousin Teddy) that she was able to keep him at home. But when at last he broke the ties of domesticity, our hero was immediately drafted into the service of humanity. Draft fol lowed draft. In fact he nearly blew away. Surely such a gigantic, dyna mic personality is indispensable to the welfare of the nation. Not only our hero, but also his wife has served our nation. Where would the coal mines be now if she had not visited them? And the square dancers? And the innumer able strawbery, raspberry, dewBerry festivals? Our hero does not want to dom inate the pages of history. His noble spirit will not let him. He feels that his country calls. So above his per sonal desires, he consented to be drafted at the Chicago convention for four more unhappy years in the White House. In deciding the ques tion at the polls we, the American people, must act for the good of our country in a chaotic world. We must disregard personalities and past records. S.” Born in a palatial mansion on the banks of the Wabash, many years ago, with a silver spoon upon his tongue, was a man destined to make history in the United States. His mother and father were both law yers and they started early in his life to load his mind with political secrets. For they foresaw that he was to save his beloved country from that naughty, naughty boy, the third term candidate. His youth was spent in toil to fill the family bread box. What with the family always on the move be tween the summer home in the mountains and the winter camp in Florida, he learned to toughen him self to all manner of labor and suf fering. And so he grew (at least in body) until he obtained a little apartment at 1010 Fifth Avenue. At last came that eventful day in old Philadelphia. The GOP was looking desperately for some one, no matter who, to run against that monster to be put up in Chicago. All of a sudden, out of thin air, the whole gallery bellowed forth the name of our hero. (You’ve no idea how many relatives he has!) And so, here we are, faced on one side with a horrible bogeyman, the third term candidate, and on the other the savior of our country. Which shall we elect? Gracie Allen!
