May 29, 1942 GOLDSBORO HI NEWS PAGE THREE BUCKET By Herbert Barbour Well, studes, this is the last issue of the Hi News that I’ll ever work on and all I hope is that we have covered sports thoroughly this year for you. That has been our aim and we hope we have fulfilled it. But now for a few orchids to be passed out. My personal compli ments go to Coach Jeffrey who has left, thanking him for the splendid cooperation given us of the Hi News’ staff and his work with ath,- letics here at GHS. To Ben Ward for his fine swim ming ability and for breaking the 100 and 50-yard swim marks in the State Meet, go some of our finest orchids. And to all the captains of our various athletic teams—Lee Adams (football), David Bradshaw (swim ming), co-captains Albert Handley and Bob Kemp (track), an orchid to each of you. More power to you, boys. And now for a farewell note .... and a reprint. But let’s have the reprint first. I thought that the All-Female Faculty Football team, picked by Bud Pate and Hot Hey ward, had such a good reception that I decided to run it again. Here goes: End Mrs. W. J. Ipock Another angle on graduation! It’s sad to leave the school and especi ally for you graduating athletes who will never play again for GHS. There are so many of you that I can’t name each one, and perhaps there are a great many who are more outstanding than others. And certainly I’m not the one to do the picking. Then, too, a great number of you just stayed out for the team, hoping that you would learn something that would help you make the team the next season. Now you are graduating — and you won’t have that chance again in GHS. But there are other teams that need you—perhaps in college, and certainly in the great game of life. It’s been a pleasure to have you out here, for you are the backbone of our fun and activity. There’ll be more to take your places but never any just like you. The best of luck to you! He has gone to Baden, N. C., to work for the Carolina Aluminum Company. Coach Jeffrey first came to Golds boro in 1936 from Smithfield, where he held a coach ing position. In an attempt to in- crease your appreciation o f Mr. Jeffrey, we give you the highlights of his coachirtg career since he has been at GHS: The football team of 1937, his second year here, went through the season untied on, unscored on, and undefeated. In 1938, Coach Jeffrey’s football squad won the Northeastern Conference Crown with seven wins and three losses. This was the first year that the conference had been organized, and the basketball team also had its first year in the con ference, losing to Greenville in the finals. His 1940 football squad won second place in the Northeastern Conference, and it was that year that he took over the coaching duties of baseball. Coach Jeffrey’s biggest surprises came this year. Before football sea son began, he thought that the chances of having a good football team were slim. But the team brought home the bacon and took the Northeastern Conference Crown with a record of no losses. Our basketball team was looked at in the same skeptical way; however, they won fourteen and lost six games and tied Greenville for the loop lead but lost in the playoff. The Quake quintet won the ACC Class A Tournament in Wilson and received a trophy, winning over Raleigh and Wilson. His baseball team won the Northeastern Confer ence baseball crown with ten wins and three losses. These have been the highlights of Coach Jeffrey’s coaching career at GHS, and they speak for them selves. He is a fine man and his associations with the boys he has taught in the physical ed program have been the finest that boys could want. We hate to see you leave. Coach, but you are needed elsewhere. So we of the HI NEWS sports staff do hereby dedicate this, our last 1942 issue of the HI NEWS, to you who have so faithfully served us in the past six years as a coach, teacher, and friend. Though all of your teams did not make the 100 per cent mark, you will always bat 1.000 with us. —Herbert Barbour, Sports Editor.
