Student Nurses From Goldsboro Hospital Receive Course In Chemistry At GHS Nine Student Nurses of the Goldsboro Hospital have been taking a course in Chemistry with Mr. R. N. Jeff rey, GHS Science teacher, since November 8 Previously there were ten stud ents but one yielded to domestic life recently and got married. The students this term are taking Anat omy, Chemistry, Microbiology, So ciology, Psychology, History of Nursing and Nursing Arts. During the second term, which begins Feb ruary 8, they will take courses in Anatomy, Chemistry, Community Health, Nutrition, Diet Therapy, and Nursing Arts. All courses ex cept Chemistry are taught by the hospital staff. The instructors all have BS De grees in Nursing. They are Miss Annie Lou Davis, Miss Audry.Mat- tews, supt. of nurses; and Mrs. Evelyn Maure. The girls are early risers. Their day begins at 7:00 a.m. They have devotionals at 7:25# and breakfast at 7:30. The future nurses’ first class starts at 8:00 and the last class ends at three o’clock with an hour for lunch. The* students have the afternoons and week-ends free but have a study period at night from 8 ’til 10. The girls come over to GHS Mon- ■ fou t)"^^:day at 11:45 and they great chance to o^yerage^h.j,;- icap. If you’re not interesic-1 in da you can play games and perhap may just sit down and talk. They industriously take notes about equa tions and ions. . • The pre-cadet period in nursing is 9 months, Jr.-cadet 21 months, and then comes the privilege of be ing a Sr.-cadet for 6 months. The students are not working in the halls yet but will be soon. It is believed that this will relieve the nurse shortage. The hospital plans to take in an additional group of girls in June if possible. She commended the department for showing the initiative to create a new type of classroom, with excel lent color scheme, and an attractive bulletin board display. Twenty Students Make Quarterly Honor Roll Tweaty students made the first quarter honor roll with the Fresh men leading, they are: Freshmen: Polly Edgerton, Ruth Edgerton, Irene Flowers, Frances Fulghum, Erline Griffin, Barbara Hood, Josephine Johnson, Beverly Lennon, Lillian Overman, Evelyn Southerland, Frankie Strosnider, La Verne Tew, Mary Ann Ward and Mimi .Weil. Seniors: Gatsey Butler, Thelma Jean Morse, Elizabeth Myatt, Mary Gardner Pate, and Harriette Thomp son. Junior: Susan Smith. Requirements for the honor roll are three ones and two twos. For merly it was necessary to make 4 ones and 1 two which was put into effect earlier in the year. B & G Committee at Work The tables in the Girls’ Powder rooms have been repaired and re decorated by the Building and Grounds Committee. The skirts for the tables were cleaned and made- over, oilcloth was purchased and tacked on. The repair work was done by Mr. Earl Pearson’s manuel trades classes. The Building and Grounds Com mittee sponsored a fire drill in GHS January 18. Students cleared the building in 3 minutes. Members of this committee helped to check the building to see if instructions were followed. Bing and the Andrew sisters are right on the beam as usual with “Don’t Fence Me In” and darn it, girls, that seems to be Jimmie Webb’s theme song.
