Friday, October 17,1947 Hi News Page Three Fayetteville’s Team Swamps The GHS Earthquakes A hustling Fayetteville football team went wild in the second quarter against the Quakes to score 27 of their 40 points to win 40-7. The Quakes dominated the sec ond half, sparked by the quarter backing of Charlie Westbrook and the swiftness of Carlton Frederick, after having 34 points scored on them in the first half. Leading the forward wall for the Quakes was Sam Lynch and J. P. Keen. The game was the fourth for the season and the second loss. The game was played in Fay etteville on the third of this month. Goldsboro last defeated Wilson in 1937. Although the Quakes dropped a game to Concord 13-0 the previous Friday, they lived up to the pre diction of a powerful line. The Quakes were leading 14-0 going into the third period when Wilson scored twice, but failed on one conversion, to make the score 14-13. Goldsboro then scored two more touchdowns in the last quarter and won the game 28-13. Scoring for Goldsboro were En nis, 2 touchdowns, and one each for Waters and McRoy. Conversion points were made by Ruffin, Ennis, Winslow and Frederick. Earthquakes Top Wilson Champs Goldsboro High School’s Earth quakes scored 4 touchdowns and as many conversions to defeat Wil son’s State Champion Cyclones, 28- 13, in the opening game of East ern AA Conference. Baby Quakes Take Kinston Juniors Goldsboro Hi’s Baby Quakes lost eleven men to the Varsity squad this year and still came bouncing home from Kinston with a 12-0 victory over their Junior, squad. The Junior line, lead by Cap tain Gilliken, averages 155 pounds. ""That is the lightest line they have, had in a number of years, but what they lack in weight is made up in spirit and aggressiveness. The line, an chored around Allen, Smith and Gilliken, holds well on the de fensive. The Backfield is lead by the Quarterback, whomever he hap pens to be. Though the average weight in the backfield is only 145 pounds, they are very fast and aggressive.
