Can You Take It?
I guess you thought you’d get
rid of me last month, but you
didn’t and you won’t. All of you
will just have to learn I’m exact
ly like these GHS wolves—so per
sistent. Since I’m back I might as
well gossip a little, so sit tight
and pray your name won’t be
mentioned.
James R. seems to have turned
all his attention to Peggy S. late
ly. We hear they’ve been seen
quite a lot in the halls together.
Maybe you’ll succeed, James, since
the letter Peggy wrote' to Gene
didn’t do much good. Here’s luck
to you!!!
Has everybody seen the talk of
GHS? Well, we have and it’s none
other than Tom P. and Dana James
G. It’s sorta heartbreaking to
have an admirer turn his affec-.
tion to someone else after such
a long time. Don’t you think so,
Mildred???
Two’s company but six is a
crowd—at least that’s what Billy
Winslow thought, so he got dates
for Annette E., and Millie C., Dor
othy C-, and Ethel P., so he could
date Ann IL. It must be love!!
Nothing else could make a boy
work so hard.
Ann Houser must really be a
character to be as small as she is.
Seems she’s after Billy H., Charlie
D., and Henry E. Maybe you’d
better stick to just Billy, Ann,
since Henry has been seen quite
a few times recently out at the
Tower with Polly E., and Peggy
M., and looks like Marilyn T.
might be beating your time with
Charlie D.
Laura h., and Carl Jinnette,
from Dudley, can usually be seen
at Ed’s most any time. Well, Carl,
anyway Laura ducks everytime a
light flashes her way. What’s the
matter, Laura, ashamed of the
way you look about that time???
Looks as though Graham Best
and Merle Best are both trying to
date Joy Creech since Durwood
got out of the picture. Oh, well,
may the Best man win.
Frankie must still be trying
to reduce but we think there are
better ways than walking home
from the airport. Don’t you, Char
lie W.?
Must be love that causes that
sparkle in Helen L.’s eyes. Has
everybody noticed that diamond
on her finger. Well, we have and
we hear the lucky guy’s gonna be
Jim Foster and the wedding’s com
ing off pretty soon.
Doctoif, Lawyer, or Indian
Chief??? No, it’s not a Lawyer
nor Indian Chief, but a Doctor
that Georgia W. has been sport
ing around with lately. When Is
the wedding gonna be, Georgia?
Carolyn L. and Jr. McRoy didn’t
get along so well together because
she is still carrying the torch for
Clip Noble. You’d better watch
that stuff,'Carolyn—it’s better to
have one than none at all, and
we hear that Clip ig no “one wom
an’s man.”
Betty B., what is this about you
and Henry M. “going steady?” If
that is true you had better stop
dating those out-of-town boys
’cause sooner or later Henry will
probably find out ....
Time changes everything!! Yes,
it even changed Harvey’s love from
“Bo” to Ruth E. Wonder if Bo
has lost any sleep???
Bessie C. is a one man woman,
and that one man is none other
than Bill Chestnut from Mount
Oliver. We don’t blame you either,
Bessie, ’cause you two sure look
mighty cute together.
Miller must .really have it bad
to stand around and watch Erline
date Travis and all the other guys
she dates and not do anything
about it. It must be wonderful to
have someone that loves you so. Is
it Erline???
Wonder what some of the GHS
students come to school for any
way. Eugene Allen, Joyce Lupton,
Pete Kannon and Evelyn Barbee
can always be found making love
in the Biology room and Jack Wil
son and Louise Lewis get along
mighty well in the health room.
“They don’t teach that in school!”
—Don’t???
Yes, it’s finally gotten around
to us that Ruth S. doesn’t like
Troy anymore and has that certain
feeling toward Junior McRoy. But
Troy doesn’t seem to mind because
he knows Bennette D., is mighty
fond of him.
Everytime the Hi News comes
out, Faye B., has a new boyfriend
—but this time she has two or
three and they are all from Kin
ston. . . . What’s the matter, Faye,
can’t you make up your mind???
Ann A. seems to be mighty hap
py that it snowed so much. Chest
er went to see her on Sunday and
had to stay a whole week because
the roads were so bad he couldn’t
go home. . . . Here’s hoping it will
snow more often, Ann, just for
you!
Jo Ann G. is a very charming
young girl—in fact, she already
has Benny, Travis, Knotty and
Durwood charmed. Which one is
going to be the lucky guy, Jo???
You can never hide true love—
at least, that is what Hugh Pope
thought when Evelyn Brown came
strolling back to him. We are glad
you two are finally back together
again, and we hope you’ll stay that
way.
Bonnie K., and Horace W. are
still seen together a lot lately. But
why shouldn’t they be? After all,
the wedding has already been plan
ned if and when she graduates.
Dan Ward is usually on timp
when he goes to see Doreen D.,
which ia almost every night. No
doubt he’s found out it’s too ex
pensive to be late, ’cause, he takes
her a box of chocolate covered
cherries every time he is.
iLooks like it’s to some people’s
advantage to have a brother on
the football team—well, Hilda
Westbrook’s, anyway—Seems she
knows the manager, Jimmy EJlis,
pretty well!!
Has everyone noticed that migh
ty cute couple that always seem
so happy when they’re near each
other??? If you haven’t, take a
look at Skippy C. and Jerry W
The “love bug” has bitten Gene
Roberts again. This time he has a
terrible crush on Aylene Rollins!
What’s the matter, Aylene, can’t
you take a hint???
Eunice has finally made up her
mind to give all her affections to
Bobby instead of Sam. Better luck
to you next time, Sam!!!!
It seems that Ann© Hood has
taken over R. L. Gurley. What’s
the matter, Shirley, did you lose
out???
What’s the matter, Jean Merritt,
aren’t the Goldsboro schools good
enough for you?? If they aren’t,
why don’t you get a transfer over
to Wilson (near Jimmy Davis)
and then you won’t have to take
the chance of being caught for
skipping school so much!!!
Well, you cats, you can stop
begging; I’m saving some choice
bits of news for next time—and I
will return. So be good or you’ll
be sor-ry!!I!

This column marks the appear
ance of an added feature in the
Hi News. We, the writers of this
column, Will in each issue, ask
a question of much importance to
the study body.
The question which was asked
this issue was “Are you in favor
of University Military Training?”
The percentage of this question
was 53.8 per cent opposed, 42.6
per cent in favor of. This in itself
shows how closely divided the stu
dents are on this question.
One hundred per cent of the vet
erans that were asked this ques
tion were definitely in favor of
Universal Military Training.
One veteran said, “It’s the fin
est thing that could happen to
you.” One veteran who is a mem
ber of the faculty said, “It is a fine
plan. It’s just like a boy going to
a Boy Scout camp. The ages of
18-20 are some of the most im
portant in a boy’s life, and a camp
of this sort is a good place for
them to be.”
Several people expressed the
opinion that there should be a
World Federation, thereby mak
ing universal military training un
necessary.
Anolher person expressed the
opinion that “if Russia keeps on
like it is going, we will need it.
We would like to get the opin
ion of our readers on this new

Style Wiles
By Barbara Russell
The appearance of “Ole Man
Winter” has brought an array
of boots of many different colors
and styles. We see mostly red,
brown, black and white ones.
The latest sweater fad (or
shirt, you might call it) is the
“jersey” worn by so many of the
girls. Red seems to be- the fav
orite color, but you’ll find some
have yellow and blue ones.
We have noticed that “Moose”
has brought about something new
for the boys. I doubt if there
are many boys in GHS without
one of “those hats.” I couldn’t
give you the correct name (if
there is one). I have heard them
called “turned up,” “crazy,” and
“dude,” but whatever it is, they’re
pretty sharp, don’t you think?
I’m sure some of you girls envy
Ruth Edgerton with her fratern
ity pin. We’re proud of you, and
think you’re both mighty lucky!
