THE INQUIRING
REPORTER
by Ed Strickland
Recently the journalism depart
ment entered the HI NEWS in
the Columbia Press Association
rating contest. Our rating was a
“two.” The major drawback was
our gossiup columns. What do you
think of them ? Should they be
dropped or continued?
Joe Bazemore — I don’t think
there would be any fun left in the
paper without them.
James Parker — I think we
should have them—they’re fun.
Merle Rosser —I think gossip

columns are fun.
Owen Ginn—I think they should
be kept, but toned down a bit.
Jo Ann Flowers—I think they
should be kept, but toned down.
Miss Betty Kinlaw—I think the
students enjoy them and they are
fun; but at the same time they are
harmful.
Jimmy Ellis — Gossip columns
are okey if they are kept within
certain limits, but keep ’em truth
ful.
Billy Howell—A lot of people j
only read the paper because of
these columns, so I think they
should be kept.
Barbara Russell — I think we
should definitely keep them. They
don’t hurt our paper as far as
the students are concerned.

Rabbi J. G. Tolochko, of Temple
Israel, Kinston, spoke at a recent
senior class devotional.
He spoke on the diploma of
Character from the School of Life.
A lot of people that do not possess
diplomas from high school or col
lege still possess the diploma of
character, and some people with
thorough educations still do not
have that important quality, char
acter. The speaker said that you
can’t judge life by the possessions
a person has, but you can judge
life by spiritual and mental growth.
He closed his talk by saying that
the important thing is not the vis
ible diploma of school, but the in
visible diploma of character.
