DAUGHTRY “A boy with future athletic star dom written all over him.’-’- This remark is descriptive of David Curtiss Daughtry, who is one of the Sports honorees for this issue. D. G. was bom in Goldsboro and has lived here all his life. At the age of 17, he stands 5’ 10” and tips the scales at a neat 155 pounds. He has blond hair and green eyes. Beginning his sports career dur ing the grammar grades, he played three years of midget football, one year of midget basketball, and one year of intermediate basket ball for the Boy’s Club. D. C. has made quite a spot for himself in high school athletics. Upon arriving at G.H.S. he earned a prominent place among the ju nior squad during the first semes ter which he successfully held dur ing his second season. Also num bered among his junior sports is one year of basketball. Upon be coming a “jolly” junior, he earned a reserve position on the varsity football squad and gained an un disputed starting birth on the var sity basketball team. D. C. has gained a large circle of friends at G.H.S. through his friendly and simple manner. Be sides his sports accomplishments he is a member of the Varsity Club and an S.A. representative. Although his plans are not certain as to what field he will enter, a boy so well liked and respected SPRING SLACKS BRASTON KEEN Also taking his stand in the spotlight of G.H.S. sports is Hen ry Braston Keen. He was born on December 28, 1934, in Goldsboro. At the age of five, he moved to LaGrange and at the age of ten returned to his birthplace where he has since remained and now resides at 405 N. Herman Street. Starts Playing Early Braston started sports at an ear ly age. For the Boy’s Club, he played two years of basketball, football, and baseball. Upon reach ing G.H.S., his early gained exper ience stood him in good stead. He quickly made a place for himself on the junior football and basket ball squads. He is an outstanding sophomore and is regarded as a very promising player. Gives Favorites Braston, now sixteen, is 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs 145 pounds. He sports a lock of long wavey hair and looks out at the world through very green eyes. He claims barbecued chicken as his favorite eating. Braston, at present, hopes to go to college after graduation, but has no decision as to what he will study. The best wishes and confi dence of this school go with him. Quakes Schedule Ten Games For FoQfbtrll Season The Varsity Football schedule for 1951 has been released by Coach Norris Jeffrey, athletic di rector. The first game of the season will be with the Elizabeth City team which is coached by Johnny Johnson, who coached G.H.S. in ’36-’37-’38. While here he was as sistant football coach, junior bas ketball, and head baseball. In Elizabeth City he is head football and head basketball coach. The full schedule is: Sept. 14—Elizabeth City ... Nov. 16—Durham Away Nov. 23—Greensboro ........Away Rocky Mount Wins Over Quakes 49-45 A fighting G.H.S. varsity squad came close to pulling one of the biggest upsets in the AAA confer ence as they fought the league- leading Rocky Mount Blackbirds all the way down the line only to fall behind in the closing minutes of the game to take a 49-45 loss. The game was floored in the William Street Gym on January 17. The highly favored Blackbirds showed very little of the brilli ance in the first three quarters of the game which enabled them to defeat the Wilmington and Dur ham squads The fourth quarter, however, showed they well deserv ed any and all praise For the Blackbirds, it was the 6-foot-4-inch center, Bartholomew, who swished in 21 points to lead the point-happy Blackbirds in their conquest for victory. The first game was a run-away with Gurley defeating Mixon 70-8. Marriner was high scorer for the losers and West for the winners. The second game between Jones and Causey edging Jones by four points, 26-22. Dawson was high for the winners, Hughes for the losers. !n the nightcap, Jeffrey defeat 'd Cox 54-15. Noble was high scor er for the winners and Daughtry and Gray were high score for the losers. The first game of the afternoon in the girl’s intramural league found the Holbrook-Griffith game a forfeit to Griffith’s home room. The second game found Mrs. Cox’s homeroom defeating Miss Grant’s home room 40-17. Bizzell was high scorer for the winners and Barnes for the losers. The third game was a close- scoring contest. Blysak defeated Britton 14-12. Cousins was high scorer for the winners and Creech for the losers. On Thursday January 11, in the boys’ intramural league, all games were forfeited. Garner forfeited to Blysak, Roberts to Causey, and Holbrook to Ipock. On Friday, January 12, in the girls’ league, Gyles defeated Ipock in the opener. Baldwin was high scorer for the winners and War rick for the losers. McKell gained the second by a forfeit. Six didn’t appear on the Simpson team. Last game highlights found Garner de feating Jeffrey 10-6. Bridgers was high scorer for the winners and Roberts was high scorer for the losers. The first game of the triplehead er on Monday, January 15, in the boys’ league found Grant defeat ing Simpson 38-20. Gainey was high scorer for the winner and Carr for the losers. The second game finals found Doak defeating Gyles 25-8. Keen was high scorer for the winners and Musgrave for the losers. The nightcap ended with Jeffrey defeating Britton 24-12. Lewis was high scorer for the winners and Langston for the losers. In the first game of the girls"^ league Tuesday, January 16, Doak’s team won by forfeit over Morgan' Second game, Cox w-on by forfeit over Griffith. Blysak defeated Teague 21-12. Cousins was high scorer for the winners. In the boys’ league Thursday, January 18, Mixon defeated Cox 47-7. Marriner was high scorer for the winners and Wiggins for the losers. Gurley defeated Ipock in the econd game 72-19. Ruffin was high scorer for the winners and Faust for the losers. In the nightcap Blysak won by forfeit of Jones. Music And Sports Falls To Quakes The Goldsboro High School Earthquakes wrapped up their fourth win in seven games Janu ary 5 when they defeated Music and Sports 37-28. It was the first game of the season for the semi- pro squad and they showed their lack of practice in their inability to handle the ball effectively.
