Friday, November 9,1951 GOLDSBORO HI NEWS Page FJve 249 Taking Physical Ed In New GHS Gym A vastly improved and enlarged Physical Education program greeted the Goldsboro High School students on their return to school this year. Now that the new gym has been completed, a much greater field of activity can be offered to GH& students. For the first time this year, all freshmen are being required to take one class of physical educa tion. There are in all 249 stu dents taking this course. Coaches Clyde Whitener, Norris Jeffrey and Bill Causey teach the boys while Mrs. George Whitted has charge of the girls. Throughout the day, there are eight periods of physical educa tion. Also, in each class there are upperclassmen who assist the coaches. This is the first time in a very long time that physical education has been offered to girls. Mrs. Whitted is new in GHS but is cer tainly not new to teaching. Be fore com'ing to GHS, she taught in Wilmington, N. C., Richmond, Va., and Palm Beach, Fla. Mrs. Whitted has four classes of phy- Fire Drills Are Staged Recently As a part of Fire Prevention Week, October 12-17, students of Goldsboro High School had three practice fire drills. The first two were a little slow. The last one was very successful, according to Fire Chief Wesley Howell of the Goldsboro Fire Deparement. The building was clearen on an average of about two and one- half minutes. Closing of windows and doors and no talking, were stressed throughout the drills. Bobby Bryan, chairman of the building and halls committee, conducted the. drills. New Friends Pastor Speaks At Assembly Reverend Frank Long, new pas tor of the Friends church in, Goldsboro, spoke to G.H.S. stu dents Friday, October 26. His text was taken from the Book of Acts. Three points of his talk con cerning David were his service, his generation and his service to God. Eight girls of the G.H.S. glee club sang, “When I Survey That Wondrous Cross.” Reverend Mr. Long pronounced the benediction. Spanish Club Will Have Own Song Red and yellow, the colors of the Spanish flag, were chosen as the official colors of the Spanish Club at its first meeting this year on October 18. Montee Maddox and Shirley Hadden were appointed to write a song for the club. Red and yel low roses were chosen as club flower. The group voted to continue un der the same name it iad last year, “Los Conquistadores.” Vice President Robert Bedford presided at the meeting in the absence of the president, William Ginn. Sophs Discuss Freshman Week A lengthy discusson on Fftsh- man Week featured the recent Sophomore class meeting held in the GHS auditorium with Jimmy Askins, president, in charge. As a result of this discussion it was decided that Freshman Day would be held this year. Fresh men would wear costumes and carry out the usual initiation pranks. Mrs. Whitted was graduated from Woman’s College in Greens boro and the University of North Carolina. The other new physical educa tion director and member of the coaching staff is Mr. Clyde White ner. Coach Whitener was graduat ed from Wake Forest College. While there^ he lettered two years in football and three years in baseball. He is, however, far from new to the people in Goldsboro. He played professional baseball for the Goldsboro Goldbugs for three years and then for the Goldsboro Cardinals for one year. Coaching assignments in GHS are assistant Varsity football coach and Jayvee basketball coach. Head of the entire Athletic De partment of GHS is Coach Nor ris Jeffrey. Coach Jeffrey has two classes of physical education and has 62 students. He is also head tennis coach and Jayvee coach. He has been at GHS for quite some time. He came here in 1936, left in 1942, and returned in 1944. He was graduated from State College and University of North Carolina. Coach Bill Causey is the other physical education director. Coach Causey has two classes of physical ed and 69 students. He came to GHS in 1948 as head Varsity foot ball coach. He jis also Varsity bas ketball coach. Coach Causey was graduated from Elon College. The last member of the coach ing staff but far from the least is a man who calls himself, “the war products,” Mr. Anthony Bly- sak. Coach Blysak came here in 1946. He graduated from State Teachers College and Bucknell University in Pennsylvania. He is now assistant head of the Athletic Department and asisstant Jayvee football coach. Another new addition to the GHS Athletic Department is the Girls Athletic Association. This is an organization of all girls who wish to join. Pins, stripes, stars, letters, and shields will be award ed to those girls outstanding in sports. Also being tried out for the first year are the assistants in the physical education classes. Those assisting Coach Jeffrey are Need ham Jones, Billy Gibson, Bobby Bryan, Bobby Martin, Carl Mil lard, Braston Keen, Billy Thorn ton, and Willard Carlyle. Those assisting Coach Causey are D. C.
