TUESDAY, APRIL 24, 1951 THE BLACKBIRD, ROCKY MOUNT HIGM SCHOOL PAGE 8 SPORTS SCOPE -by- Johnnie and James The baseball team has been doing fine so far this year and is looking better all the time. Hopes are high and Rocky Mount may be sporting a championship team this year. Officially baseball is here again. The season started April 16 and the race is on. The big question is “Who will wind up on top?” Homeroom 11 defeated home room 2 in the first game, 6 to 3. It was a free scoring affair and another inning could have meant another winner. Intramural sports has started on the softball games. The first game was played by homerooms, 11 and 2, which are junior home rooms. We like the way Coach Lundy’s office has been decorated, but the question and problem is who did the decorating. In the .first sophomore intra mural game of the season, the bous of homeroom 13 trounced the boys of homeroom 12, 21-3, Hoi/eroom 1 defeated homeroom 102 in a close game last Wednes day, 1-0. It was the first senior game of the year. In another junior clash, home room 14 overpowered homeroom 202, 14-1. Homeroom 14 scored most of its runs on errors. After a rather rough start this season, the tennis team has settled down and is looking fine. If noth ing else occurs, this group should finish in top place. Coach Lundy, who coaches the tennis team, said that he chose Dick because “Dick is a fine tennis player and has worked hard for the past four years on his game.” Dick, a 160 pound, 17 year old senior from Miss Vause’s home room is president of the student body and is very, active in the student organization. He is also a member of the Hi-Noc-Ar staff. Service club, and the National Honor Society. He was chosen class president his sophomore year and has served as chairman of the House and Grounds committee of the student council. Among other things he has been a delegate to several meetings including the Boy’s state. National Honor Society, and student counciK Dick is a member of the Boy Scouts, and assistant scout master of Troop 11. He is also an Eagle Scout and is active in the work. He has been playing tennis for the past five years, been on the school team for four years, and has been a letterman for the past three years. When asked about the teams’ chances this season, Dick sai9, “We have a strong, experienced, well-balanced team, but we have been hurt by bad weather so far. If we beat Goldsboro, who have won 35 consecutive high school matches, our team could end the season with a 11-1 record.” Dick plans to attend Davidson college after graduation ‘and then, if nothing happens, he plans to enter law school.
