TUESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1951 THE BLACKBIRD, ROCKY MOUNT HIGH SCHOOL PAGE 8 PIGSKIN REPORT -BY- GEORGE and MARLAND It looks as though Maryland will be champs in the Southern Confer ence this year after the hard- fought game with UNC. The Terps came out on top 14-7, but they were given a big scare by the stub born Tar Heels. Carolina had the ball on Maryland’s 9 yard line with 95 seconds left. Billy Williams pass ed to “Goo Goo” Gantt, who was in the end zone. Just as the ball touch ed him, the Maryland safety man hit him for all he was worth. Gantt droped the ball and the* game end ed shortly after. Bob “Monk” Bartholomew is making a name for himself at Staunton Military Academy. He is a starting tackle on the prep school team. When he played for RMHS he was All Eastern. Notre Dame has come out with a new formation, known as the “I” formation. All the backs line up in a single line back of the center. When the ball is snapped, they start in a different direction or can file off in front to lead intei'fer ence. Coach Lundy’s “B” squad had a very impressive win over the .Tay- vees of Raleigh, 26-6. Their pass ing was superb with Joe Lancas ter and James Sherin doing most of the heaving to James Chandler, who looked as though he was their fav orite flanker down field. They were elected by the students to represent the school. They are cn the field to lead the student body in cheers. What is the reason for the lack of yelling? Are the students not cooperating with the cheerleaders or are the cheerlead ers not cooperating with the stu dents ? Nothing gives a person more pep than to hear the old school song being played at a football game. Does the band cooperate at the games as it should? Do they sound off after each T. D. and at the half time? Do the cheerleaders expect too much out of each individual? Does each one yell when there is a yell being done? Do the cheerleaders overdo the yelling? After all, each person paid to see the game (or did he ?) and naturally he wants too Williams Watch Shop Diamonds, Watches and Jewelry Expert Watch Repairing 835 Falls Road Dial 2-3503 WILLIAM BENNETT’S Bishop Laundry Co. “WE DO IT BiETTBR” Dial — 4145 Dixie Letter Service Photo-Offset, Booklets and Newspapers, School Annuals Complete Duplicating and Mailing Service Rocky Mount Phone 7095 Parker’s Restaurant AND Dining Room Air Conditioned STEAKS And SEAFOOD 145 Nash Street Teachey - Womble I 125 Nash Street OUTSTANDING LADIES’ READY-TO-WEAR “PLACE STUDENTS GO” Bulluck Clothing Company “BRANDS THEY KNOW” RM Team Beats Charlotte Eleven R. M. Blackbirds broke a two game losing streak in Charlotte, October 19, over the stubborn Wolf- pack of Charlotte Tech. The Black birds, who have been scoreless for two weeks, had a fairly good ground attack punch. The Wolfpack had not won a game this year but were sure gunning for the game against the Bird's. Tqch started the game to rolling when they recovered a fumble on R. M. 30. Perry Helms, Tech’s quarterback, passed to Billy Ray, who caught it on the five and scam pered across for the T. D. The con version by Faulk was made to make it 7-0. After taking the kickoff, the Birds marked up the field with Bob Deans, Gene Williams, and Bob Owens lugging the pigskin most of the time. Williams then went over on a quarterback sneak for pay dirt. Casey’s kick was messed up by a bad pass from cen ter. At half it was R. M. 6-Teck 7. R. M. scored the final touchdown in the third quarter. With Coarence Skinner doing most of the mail- carrying the Birds slowly but sure ly marched up the field. If it is the fault of the cheerleaders, complain. Don’t for get they were elected by you. Last but not least, test yourself.
