Birds Must Take Bulldogs To Rate Tie

Time is once again drawing near
for the Southern Confernce finals
which are to be played at the Will
iam Neal Reynolds Memorial gym
nasium. As for Carolina and Wake
Forest, the chances are definitely
out. The probably six contestants
will be West Virginia, State, Clem-
son, Duke, South Carolina, and
Maryland with the winner going
to the N.C.A.A. quarter finals.
At the present time Coach Bill
Lundy’s basketball quintet has a
5-6 loop average. Tonight’s game
with Fayetteville will be the last
one of the year for four of the
Rocky Mount players. They are
Billy Overton, C. C. Daughtridge,
Dudley Whitley and Ed Bandy.

same time, goodby.
The Babybirds seem to be keep
ing up with the varsity pretty well.
They, too, have a 5-6 loop record
and only one remaining game. Con
sidering the size of RMHS in com
parison with their competitior
they are to .be commended for their
outstanding playing.

Under the limitation imposed by
the N.C.A.A., the practice session
will last only 20 days. Rogers’
chief concern is securing good
material for the backfield.
Three of the 12 teams to com
pete in the N. I. T. games have
already been picked. They include
Duquesne, St. John’s and St. Bon-
aventure. From the Southern Con-
:erence those teams being consid-
3red are Duke and West Virginia.
N. C. State was included in a
second group picking.

The Rocky Mount Blackbirds lost
a hard fought basketball game by
a score of 45-41 to the Wilson Cy-
'■lones in the' rival city last Tues-
lay night.
The game which was very even-
y matched, proved to be a real j
hriller the entire length of the
oall game. C. C. Daughtridge was
;iigh scorer for the Birds with 16
points and also turned in a fine
defensive game.
The locals now have a 5-6 loop
record but have a chance to raise
it tonight when they play the
Fayetteville Bulldogs in Fayette
ville.
Old Rivals May Meel
To Decide Standings
Could the last game of the sea
son be the climax of the year for
the Blackbirds? Well, this year it
will either finish the season if
they lose or carry them into a play
off game with their old rivals, the
Wilson Cyclones.
The Cycs have a record of five
wins and seven defeats after drop-
ning a game to Durham last Fri
day night, 67-60. Rocky Mount
now has a record of four wins and
seven defeats, and if they can drop
the Fayetteville Bulldogs tonight,
there will be a tie for the fourth
place in the Eastern AAA Con
ference.
This position is important be
cause they will meet the Greens
boro Whirlies in the first game in
Durham at the North Carolina
Triple A Conference Tournament,
March 13, 14, and 15.
There is also another possibility
for a tie if Raleigh ibeats Durham.
This would put Durham and Wil
mington in a tie for third place,
and they might have to have a
play-off game, although they are
assured of a tourney berth.
