“Six hundred dollars! What are
’''ou ivying to do? Peed the con
tinental army?”
i>io, oarolyn and George aren’t
asking for that much to buy Sun
day dinner with, but that’s a typi
cal exclamation that might be
heard at one of the Junior-Senior
committee meetings. It seems that
Elizabeth Vann, head of the food
cnmmittee wants to feed us all In
style at the annual Jr.-Sr. Ban
quet.
T liQn’i- gue's its any fun esti
mating the amount of food that
should be bought for the banquet,
and a lot nf vork is involved. But
c’e'spite this fact, there’s always
time for fun. Take Bill Tharringr-
ton for instance. He had been sit-
♦i’Tor (ieiectedly in room 19 listen
ing to the various estimates tha*
the committees were making.
When asked if ^e needed an->-

Let’s look in on one of the com-
cav the program com
mittee. Now this seems like an in-
tpiHp-ent gro'no of reople. Jimmy
T'avis as usual is trying to think
up a bright i'lea for the program,

Ing Peggy Jones in the fine art of
singing. So much for the program,
we saw too much as it is. Let’s go
take a peep at another committee
in operation.
“No, I refuse to have them!”
“Oh, come on, let’s give them a
break; they need the money.”
These and other remarks are
made by L. M. Barnes and Harry
Gray who are two of the many
who are trying to select the best
band for the dance. Rose Booth is
busy typing away another letter
asking a famous band if they will
play for this occasion. This must
be the fiftieth one she has had to
write. Freddy Turnage says he’ll
get up an sing a song if they can
only get a band. Well, let’s leave
this problem to the committee and
50 to another group and see how
they are getting along.
What’s this? When did they
start having school at ni^ht? I
hnusht st'!!dents got enough of it
in the daytime, without having to

This gives you an idea of what

Geiiung To Direct
New Local Band
“Let’s start again, please” were
the words of Leonard L. Genung,
director of the newly organized
City Recreation band, at the first
rehearsal Monday night, April 13.
At the initial meeting in the
Masonic Temple, many local mu
sicians showed an active interest
in the organization of the band.
Many students of the high school
band have also expressed an in
terest in participating in the city
band.
Mr. Genung, former resident of
Beloit, Wisconsin, has had a great
deal of training and experience in
'-I'lnyl directig. While attending Il
linois Wesle^’an University in
^!oo-'ington, he played the trum
pet in the university orchestra,
the marching band, and the con
cert band. After graduating with
a Bachelor Degree in Music, Gen
ung taught instrumental music in
+l’e public schools of Hoopston,
■^iiipois. He directed the Sixth
division Army Band in Korea in
1947.
The new local band is sponsored
by the City Recreation Depart
ment. Plans are now underway
for the presentation of one con
cert per week in the pavilion at
Sunset Park.

Girls Play House In School
Sewing, Cooking Some Fun
One would ask “What’s going on
in the homemaking department?”
if they would only drop by at any
hour of the day. With a deadline
set for that “first garment I evei
made” all first year girls are
racing to meet it on time. Just
look around in a few days. They
will show you the results—they
hope!. Much interest has been
shown in this project as ctin be
easily told by the willing spirit
and diligence with which these
girls have worked.
The second year class has re
cently completed a slip cover fo?
the sofa in the living room. It is
a lovely shade of daik green and
gives the room a nice lift for
spring. It is a parting gift tn- the

Senior classes are experimenting
with party foods and table deco
rations for special occasions. A
display of clever ideas for placr;

found on the bulletin board in

Hail, Mr, Car tee!
Amiable, pleasant, anxious to
please, ready to aid and help out
and always handy. This is char
acteristic of Mr. Cartee, a famil
iar figure around school, whose
typical saying is “What do you
v/ant now?”
Whenever a window reedi re
placing, shades need to be hung or
. pencil sharperner needs repair,
tlie staff members alwayos send
for Mr. Cartee. He is Rricky
Mount school’s official carpenter,
plumber, brick mason, cabinet
maker and general all-round
aandyman. He has been associat-
ei. with tlie local schools in this
capacity for over twenty years.
VAtbout Mr. Cartee, Rocky
Mount schools would be Quite
I helpless. He is to the system what
the mainspring is to a watch.
Without him the place just would
not seem the same.
Contrary to the old adage,
“Jack-of-all-trades, master-of-
none,” Mr. Cartee is truly the im-
Eung hero of the Rc-cky Mount
high school system.
