Birds Win Two,
Lose To Bulldogs
After whipping Wilmington 7-0,
then dropping an 18-6 contest to
the Bulldog:., the Blackbirds once
more arrivec: at the winners circle
trouncing lictle Washington 20-0.
Sophomore reserves Bunny Bell
and Ray Harper were the defen
sive spark pli;?s and chirf ground-
giabbers. It is inusual to find two
such good bacss doing so well as
sophomores.
iij Wilmingto a the Birds played
flawless ball, fi-.itering only at the
Wilmington goa iline. The Wildcats
played hard but were badly out
classed as the smooth moving,
hard running Blackbirds rolled
over 323 yards. Only the repeated
ly determined goal line stance of
the Wildcats made the game excit
ing.
Biit “Mr. Fumble” donned a
Blackbird uniform for the Fayette
ville clash. Kach fumble served as
a stepping stone to pay dirt and
thp Bulldoprs made the most of ad-
vantafres. However, the backfield
not t>ie real cause of defeat,
but the pitifully weak defensive ef
fort nf the Blackbird line. This
as both a surprise and dis-
pprin'ntroent as the Bulldog
guards made bowling pins of
pioni-vv’-(i liremen.
Let it be remembered, however,
that it 'vac not the same In the
Wa.sbinetnn game as “Operation
Sopho’T^f>re”. in which underclass
men .starred, proved highly suc-
ces.sful.
Hav wpvper hit pay dirt late In
the opening quarter for the first
score, and mini'tes later a Pam
Pack nunt v/as blocked by Smokey
Lancaster and recovered in the
end zone bv Baxter Savage for the
,>;eror)d. Then Bunny, Bell’s third
quarter. 4.‘> vard touchdown scam
per wrapped up the game.

Rocky Mount’s hopes for a state
championship in football seemed
to be crushed when the Blackbirds
were defeated by Fayetteville, Oc
tober 9. This game put Rocky
Mount into third place in the con
ference with a 2-1 record.
Later, while the locals were
handing the Pam Pack a 20-0 de
feat, Durham whipped Fayette
ville, putting Rocky Mount back
into the conference race. The
Birds took to the field Friday
night knowing that a victory for
them would throw the conference
lead into a three-way tie. But a
defeat at the hands of Durham
would definitely eleminate any
chance of winning the champion
ship.
Open Year Round
Ever since the opening game
with Oxford Orphanage, public
enthusiasm has been dropping
steadily. Not only is the crowd In
the grandstand smaller but things
also seem to have quited down on
the student side of the field. The
attendance at the Washington
game was the poorest yet. Be
tween five and seven thousand
fans saw the Birds whip the Wild
cats In Wilmington. What’s the
matter with Rocky Mount?
Duke University seemed to be
heading for national honors win
ning all of their games, but a
heart breaking 14-13 Army victory
hurt the Blue Devils. However,
they inay still be one of the na
tion’s top teams at the end of the
season. Carolina, another big four
team, is enjoying its first good
season in years unde'- Coach Bar
clay, who replaces Carl Snavely.
Three victories in a row gave Tar
Heel fans something to talk about
in spite of a 26-0 loss to Maryland.

Three Players Hurt
Injuries, the fear of coaches and
plague of teams, has severed the
playing services from three Rocky
Mount high school athletes. Those
so relieved are Jimmy Lancaster,
Theo Pitt, and Joe (Smokey) Lan
caster.
Jimmy, former first string
quarterback, was first injured. A
bad khee carried over from last
season was the cause. It was in a
practice scrimmage that Pitt’s in
jury. a broken thumb ended his
playing for the sea.son. His posi
tion was end.
Smoky, whose defense ability, as
well as offensive ability, was a tre
mendous asset to the Blackbird
cause, suffered a ruptured blood
vessel in the Washington affair. It
should be noted that all three boys
were hot basketball prospects.
Whether or not their Injuries will
omit them from play is in doubt.

I Durham rolled to a 41-0 victory
to gain first place ui the Eastern
XAA conference P'riday night. The
one sided score was a surprise to
I botii players and fans.
i In the first quarter, Durham
took the opening kickoff and
drove down deep in Rocky Mount
territory. A TD was called back
because of a clipping penalty, but
two downs later the score was
made good. Durham converted
and the score was 7-0. After a long
I run by Warren, Durham recovered
a Blackbird fumble and scored on
long pass to Pulley. Again the
! point was good.
During the third quarter the
Bulldogs struck again. Another
long pass was completed for a
I touchdown. The point was good
and the score at halftime was 21-0.
In the third quarted Durham
recovered a fumble on kickoff and
Hunnicutt carried the ball over on
a long run. The kick w'as no good
and the score moved to 27-0.
Again in the third quarter the
Bulldogs ran the ball over for an-
other TD and again Durham con
verted. In the final frame the
: Birds were pinned against their
I own goal. A Bird punt was blocked
and run over for the final score
of the game. The extra point was
kicked and the ball game ended
at 41-0 with Durham on top.
After the game, Coach Adkins
remarked “I didn’t know they
could do that to us.” Later he said
that Warren and a couple of
others played a pretty fair game
but as a whole the playing was
very poor.
