He got a view of the Rocky Mount schools and students as he passed in a motorcade last Friday. President Bayar is interested in schools and students and has helped the Turkish schools progress during the time he has been in office. Band Gives Concert Under the leadership of Mr. Herbert L. Carter, the East CEiro- lina College Band presented a concert in a special asbembiy jast Wednesday, February 17. Members of the band come from all over North Carolina. Rocky Mount high school was well repre- Lented with four former students taking outstanding positions in the group. They were Ralph Cha- £on, Neil .Williams, Dick McIntyre and Clyde Straughn. Some of the numbers that the students especially enjoyed were “Stepping Out,” “Overture from the Flying Dutchman,” and “El Cabalero.” Mr. Black, an alumnus of the ECC Concert band, intorduced the director to the student body and was instmmental in getting it to include Rocky Mount in its tour of North Carolina. He visited several North Ca.o]ii:a citie;; including Raleigh, Rocky Mount, Wilson, and Nash ville. First Turkish Visit niis was the first time in American history that an official of Turkey had visited this coun- try. The purpose of this visit was not for political reasons but to encourage a closer relationship between the two countries through a person to person contact. Turkey has risen during the past 30 years from turmoil to an out standing economic and govern mental position. The total produc tion has doubled during the time his party has been in office. After he be came Prime Minister, he contin ued to work for a better Turkey and finally established a two party system. He founded and or ganized the Democratic Party which took office in 1950. Turkey is an independent re public located in Asia and Is bor dered on the South by Iraq, Suria, and the Mediterranean Sea; an the west by the Agean 6ea and Greece; on the north by Bulgaria and the Black Sea; and on the I east by Russia and Iran. Official flower of this country is the tulip and the colors are red and white. The flag is red with a white half moon and a star. Rocky Mount was honored to have had such distinguished guests and is proud to say that President Celal Bayar visited here. Janet Spain went to the Mili tary Ball at Duke University, Feb ruary 19. She said that she had a wonderful time. Seniors are still talking about the party given by and for them, January The party was given by Elizabeth Vann, Gordon V/il- kinson, Betty Ivey, Ruth ‘Sides, Mary Proctor, Sue Gregory, Mar garet Daughtridge, Vivian Wil liams, Eddie Booth, John Mar riott, Bobby Deans, Stanley Leg gett, Gordon Waters, Jimmy Crumpler, Robert Daughtridge, and Garland Chick at the Benve- nue Country Club. One of the highlights of the night was a gong by Mrs. George Booth, who pre sented he • rendition of the St. Louis Blues. Walter Plummur and his orchestra from Tarbovo fur nished music for dancing. Members of the choir and their j guests gave a party after the I “Nutcracker Suite” at Parker’s jDir/e-In. Pood was stacked to the ceiling and everyone ate until “they were about to pop.” Congratulations to the Hi-Noc- Ar Staff for meeting its deadline in getting the annual “signed, sealed and delivered” to Texas to be printed. Everyone is anxiously awaiting its arrival in May. This year’s basketball team is wonderful! The boys have really v/orked hatd to get that first title. They not only have won the most important games and won the Eastern AAA Con- '’^en'-p championshin, but have also played exciting ball through out the entire season. On February 10, George Knight. Jimmy Davis, Carter Hedrick, Stanley Still, and Jimmy Selby went to Goldsboro for the Angiew B. Duke Scholarship interviews. Betty Sue Cash attended that exciting Duke-State basketball game, February 9. Betty Sue was rooting for State, so some of the excitement was lost. Looking for a new evening dress proved to be a most interest ing experience for Val McMillan when she went to Raleigh, Feb ruary 9. She returned with a dreamy creation.
