TUESDAY. OCTOBER 26, 1954 THE BLACKBIRD, ROCKY MOUNT SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL PAGE FIVE Sports Scope with Sonny Cherry Blackbirds Suffer Third Straight Defeat Since the last issue of THE BLACKBIRD the football picture has changed considerably. BIG POUR^The football situa tion in the big four is not looking too bright. Duke continues to be the class of this group but the Blue Devils tumbled from 6 to 19 on the national ratings a fter los ing to Army. Carolina, Wake Forest, and State have all left much to be de sired with their play. However. State appears to have the mast improved team in the group. The Wolfpack looks as though thej’ might give someone some trouble in the future. BOWL PICTURE — The bowl picture, at present, is far from clear. The host team for the Orange Bowl is supposed to be the champion of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Maryland or Duke seem likely to gain this honor, al though the Maryland team has taken quite a tumble from their last year’s national number one rating. The ‘Terps aren’t in the top twentj», after losing to UCLA and tying Wake Forest. It looks from here as though Duke will represent the ACC im- less there is an upset in the mak ing. No N. C. team has been in a major bowl game since 1949. DANIELS INC. Fashion Center For Jr. Misses Visit the new SUNSET PHARMACY For All of your sandwiches and fountain needs. H. H. The locals were hampered throughout the game by injuries to most of the starting backfield. This loss marked the second year in a row that the Birds were de feated in their homecoming game by shut-out scores. In Fayetteville both teams play ed a body to body contest. Fay etteville, greatly favored over Rocky Mount, was unable to get but one touchdown in the game. Rocky Mount, pushing hard against the Fayetteville line, was unable to score any touchdowns. Almost everjpne, expect Rocky Mount students, were surprised that the locals were not defeated any worse than they were. The final score in this thriller was 6 to 0 in favor of Fayetteville. Rocky Mount was scheduled ta play Washington on October 15, but destructive Hurricane Hazel would not let the Birds play. This game has been re-scheduled for October 29 at Washington. The Blackbirds have two more games other than the one with Washington: one is with Wilson, and in this game two teams will be fighting to win the Shelton Looms’ Trophey; the other game is with Raleigh, and this game will be played at Raleigh. The games are scheduled for November 5 and 12 respectively. Adkins Will Coach N. Carolina Team In Shriners Game Coach “Knocker” Adkins will be after his third Shrine Bowl Vic tory in as many tries when he carries his North Carolina team to Charlotte to face a strong South Carolina foe, December 6. In his previous years as coach of the North Carolina All-Stars he won in 1937 and again in 1951, being head coach at Rocky Mount both years. His assistant coaches will be announced later, as will the members of the team. Although South Carolina is favored to win this season, many local fans won’t be surprised to see Coak Adkins come back vic torious.
