Would you have any idea as to the number of students in North Carolina who have no type of gymnasium? The number who have barely sufficient equipment such as a ball, an old bat, and a worn glove? Just imagine how goggle-eyed with happiness these students would be if they could have at their disposal such a gym and all the equipment we have! Even with these make-shift buildings and insufficient equipment, they have more real school spirit in one game than we display in an entire season. What is it that is causing us to let our school spirit “fly out the door”? Are we so spoiled with all our fine equipment that we can’t appreciate the part our team does for us? The sad truth is that we are missing so many valuable experiences that will help us so in the future and which could be fun to all students now! If we’re not spoiled, let’s prove it and fill the stadium for the first baseball game so that Rocky Mount High can be as proud of its student body as it is of its team! A Worthwhile Ad! When a department in a school produces an exception ally good public performance, it is the best possible ad vertisement for the school. Our choir concert Friday night, February 10, has had many compliments from the citizens of Rocky Mount. Not only does this give the choir a good name, but our school also. It is to the choir and Mr. Parry, the director, that we wholeheartedly say thank you for such an excellent contribution to the school and community! Our “City Fathers” are also in line for a thank-you from the students! Having provided the city with one of the most up-to-date and modern health centers in the State, we will greatly benefit from this advancement now as well as when we take our places as adult citizens of the community. Would you be prottd, or humble and ashamed? Many would feel vei-y humble. This is one reason we should always be the children that would make God proud. Many times we fall and say, “God will forgive me. He is my friend.” Stop and think! Would you betrayi your friend who died on the cross that you might live? You might think no one is perfect. God doesn’t expect perfection, but he expects us to be servants of His holy words. We could profit by asking our selves these questions: (1) Would God do this? (2) Would God commend me for doing this? Remember these questions so one day our God might say, “Well done, thou good and faithful ser-r vant.” No, ly tiever i«sH a. lie / Editor’s Note: Written by Doris Cooper, a local senior, the above devotional has been sub mitted for publication in Power, a daily devotional booklet written especially for young people. Mimi Enjoys Honor As Top Personality For Month of Feb. “She’s not your aunt, she’s your mother’s cousin.” So goes there a story For many long jears a certain senior thought that a relative in Panama was Aunt Claude, although she was actually a cousin. Better get your connections straight before you go to Panama for college next year. Miss X. This senior is a talented one. She won an award for house dec orations last Christmas and did a solo in ‘South Pacific.’ She also writes for the Sunday Telegram. The fact that her favorite food is chocolate pie might have some thing to do with her being only five feet high. But a six feet four- inch shadow with the tag of B. M. is usually near her, sunny or cloudy. Miss X is business manager of the Ho-Noc-Ar and originated the little Indian as its identifying trademark. She is one of the twelve outstanding seniors and has membership in the National Honor Society and the Good Sports Club. If you haven’t guessed who this vivacious creature is, you’d better learn more about your student body, because she is no other than amiable, Mimi Brewer. Legend Or Truth, It Pays! Now that the fourth six-weeks period is more than half through and the time for testing approaches, students again try to convince themselves that getting just a little bit of help on a test is okay. Once again, however, let us look at an example set by George Washington, born 223 years ago today. At an early age, Washington is reputed to have cut down a cherry tree. Because of his guilty conscience, he con fessed this act and was commended for his honesty. Whether this incident be truth or legend, it is a recog nized fact that this quality was evidenced in the life of “Father George,” and he went on to become the com- mander-in-chief of the Continental Army, and later, the first president of this country. What Is The Fate Of Formosa And The Nationalist Party? Ed. Note: With the world situation as it is there should be no student who hasn’t some idea as to the vexing problems that are prevalent today. To find out the students’ views of the problem facing the United States concerning Formosa, two juniors and one senior were asked what they think of the Formosa situation and what they think will become of it. Below are the answers as given to the editor. Audrey Kennedy: “The situation in For mosa is a delicate one and one that might be the spark to set off a third World War. ;Pi| [ think President Eisenhower was wise to ?et the Congressional approval of sending '.roops to this area if necessary. Our form- 5 ?r president Truman was criticized a great I ieal for sending troops into Korea without consulting Congress. America stands ready to protect freedom loving people. Com munism must be stopped or it will spread like a plague.” Tommy Vaughan: “I think the United States put itself in a very perilous position^ by helping evacuate the Tachen Islands. I believe that the Communists will try to bluff the Nationalists out of Formosa; but" if the United States continues to show our terrific sea and air power in the Pacific,* maybe the Communists will just draw* back and not attack.” Faye Batts; “Concerning the Formosa situation, I think the United States’ actions are justified. Any effort on the part of i' the United States forces to preserve lives yand property while preventing Communist aggression is well taken. I believe the Communists mean business about the actual invasion of Formosa because of the recent air build-up on the mainland op posite the Tachens. I believe the United States should be willing to offer needed air support for the defense of off-shore islands.”
