PAGE FOUB THE BLACKBIKD, ROCKT MOUNT SENIOR mOH SCHOOL TUESDAY, FEBRUARY Z&, 1955 German Exchange Teacher Bids RM Friends Farewell Visitor Receives Many Courtesies Student Org Keeps Projects Underway Among the many year round projects of the Student Ccuncil is the sponsorship of the weekly newspaper article, “Hi-Lites.” “Hi-Lites” features the most important school happenings for each week, and each year the column has a different author. This year it is written by Kay Williford, chairman of the publi city committee. Money has been raised for the Student Council through the spon sorship of the concession stand at football games and the concession stand on the special train which went to Fayetteville. The Council tries to break even on the sale of student directories. Another project of the group was the selling of tickets to the PTSA sponsored program given by the choir and Valeria Sorrell’s dance students. Student Council members are now working to develop an intro- mural athletic program in the new gymnasium. When Miss Ursula Kanzow was here, the Student Council enter tained her. Jean Stephenson, chairman of the social committee, acted as Miss Kanzow’s guide. Class elections have recently been completed under the spon sorship of this group. H. E. Savage, Manager H. F. While here Miss Kanzow was the recipient of many courtesies. Teas, parties, and dinners were given In her honor. She was also entertained by many local civic clubs. Sandy Thorp, president of the student body, gave a party for his cabinet and Miss Kanzow at his home. The day before she left Miss Kanzow was given an engraved silver dish by the senior high fa culty. The Student Organization presented Miss Kanzow with a white cashmere sweater and a scrapbook, which highlighted her stayi here. Miss Kanzow checked with the Department of Education in Ral eigh and then went to Washing ton, where she stayed two weeks. She will sail for her home, Dus- seldorf, Germany, from New York and reach there by the end of February. H-Noc-Ar Ready Members of the Hi-Noc-Ar staff kept the midnight oil burning last w'eek as they put the finishing touches on the 1954-55 Hi-Noc- Ar. Miss Murchison and her crew had to have their pet, the annual, tied in a neat package and at the printers in Charlotte by Saturday, February 19. The staff worked on the publi cation after school hours for sev eral days right up to the last min ute to insure aimual buyers the best book ever. All kinds of tales have circulat ed about the contents and the cover of the new Hi-Noc-Ar. Not until May will the entire student body know what the book is ac tually like and if there are really purple polka dots on the cover as some ha"ve described it. (Photo by Barringer) ‘Teen Talent’ TV Show Result Of Work, Split-Second Timing By HENRY THOMPSON Having seen the “Teen Talent” program on television Saturday, February 5, most of you realize how much work and split-second timing the director, Ron Felton, had to do. To prepare this program more people worked than were recog nized on T. V. and with Ron’s consent I am going to use part of this article to recognize Jimmy Moore, assistant director and Pegggy Whitehurst, art director, whose beautiful work could not be used due to camera difficulties at W. N. C. T. Ron Felton, director, and Jimmy Moore, assistant director and last but not least, Rocky Mount’s an swer to Greenville’s Bill Norwood, Fred Holloman and his accordian completed the group. The program was sponsored by the Radio Broadcasters Club of Rocky Mount Senior High School in cooperation with the staff of the Greenville television station WNCT. Mr. C. E. Graham, faculty ad viser to the club, gave unselfishly his time and “know how” to the project. This is the first of a series of television shows to be sponsored by the Radio Broadcasters Club this year. Good Sports Pledge 8 New Members Members of the Good Sports Cl'jib chose their second semester pledges during a business and spaghetti supper meeting at Doris Cooper.’s home on Januar.ji 31. ' Tliose receiving bids are Peggy Jones, Norma Bulluck, Norma Savage, Joyce Farris, Judy Carr, Alma Daughtridge, Sheila Cul pepper, and Shirley Burnette. All of these girls are juniors. At this meeting, the members also elected their second semester officers. Jeanette McIntyre re tains her office as president. Joy Ann Hayes is vice-president, Mary Prances Wan-en is secretary, and Joyce Harris is the treasurer. A future project of the Good Sports group is to give a picnic for all the football, baseball, and basketball players, the tennis and golf team and all managers and cheereaders. This picnic will be given during the spring and the program will be furnished by the pledges. Coast Guard Gets 2 To be able to take advantage of the government’s Educational G. I. bill, Dwight Hinton and Bobby Stancil signed up for four jiears in the Coast Guard after the first semester exams were completed. Both boys were in line for grad uation this year and both had been active in sports. Dwight was a member of the state championship doubles tennis team, and Bobby was the manager of the baseball team his sophomore and junior years. The boys didn’t wait until they graduated because the G. I. bill goes out of effect before gradua tion and they wanted to get the benefit of it.
