ZZ. 1955 THE BLACKBIRD, ROCitT MOUNT SENIOR BSGH SCHOOL ^^1 Sports Scope With Sonny Cherry Cagers End Season With Win THE BIG FOUR — BasketbaU fortunes of the big four this year are good. Carolina, in particular, has looked uch better with much of its improvement hinging on. the sensational play of sophomore forward Lennie Rosenbluth. Al though Carolina has been playing a type of possession ball all year, Rosenbluth has been averagiiig over 25 points a game. This is good ball in anybody.’s league. From here it looks as if State should get the nod as the best team in the big four with Carolina as the most improved. State should take the Conference championship it the sensational play of Rormie Shavlik holds up. THE ACC — The ACC tourna ment this year should be an excit ing one with State managing to take the title. However, if State should win the title, the runner- up team would represent the ACC in the NCAA play-offs ajs State has been declared ineligible. The most hotly contested spot in the tourney will be the nmner-up spot and either Maryland, Duke, or Carolina’s “Flaming Five” will probably take this place. All ACC—Picking this best five players in the ACC would be a hard decision for anyone since ENTERPRISE Furniture Co. Complete Rue- Deoartment (Wall To Wall Tnstallation) talent is evident on evry squad this year. From this corner it ap pears that the best five players in the conference are Ronnie Shav lik, Dickie Homric, Lennie Rosen bluth, Buzz Wilkinson, and Ron nie Mayjer. What’s Your BIQ? As has been said over and over again, it takes everyone to make up the backbone of that much needed cheering section. The team can’t win, unless each student helps. It looks as if RMSHS will have a baseball team that the “Yanks” would envy. The squad didn’t lose many of its players last yeai’; and even if the team is young, theji are well trained and experienced. Coach Cleet Cleetwood is looking toward a good season and we hope he has one. Remember, students, caring about your team means sharing with your support. The ball seems to be roll ing in the right direction for us in this field and I am sure Coach Knocker Adkins has a “fireball” team this year. Possibly the biggest loss last year came in tennis. Coach Bill Uindy has only two boys returning to the squad this year, so he will have to build a strong team around Bobby Wimberly and that “flash” on the court, Fred Reuben. Coach Lundy has brought to the courts some of the finest teams in this section of the state and you can bet he will do it again this yeai'. Climaxing a not so good season with a decisive victory; over Wil son, 53-41, the Birds closed the 1954-55 eager season on Februai’y 15. 'This game was fast and furious with Rocky Mount scoring fkst and keeping the lead for the whole game. Paul Blake, Wilson’s star performer and one of the leaders in conference scoiing was tied down by the Blackbii’ds and could score only 7 points. It was his sterling play that proved so disas trous to the locals when they played in Wilson. Top performei-s for Rocky Mount were Saimmy Mouzon, high scorer for the contest with 17 points, rangy center Don tSallings, and little Harold Gilbert. The victory however did not af fect Rocky Mount’s standing, which is fifth place. The Birds did retain their unbeaten record on theh- new floor though. The four tournament teams will be Raleigh, Wilmington, Payetteville, and Wil son. The Birds plajed one of their best games of the year in their premier performance in the new gym, defeating Durham 65-46, on January 28. The highlight of the exciting contest was a 71-foot field goal by Clem Edwards, coming in the last seconds of the third quarter. Clem, playing the best game of his career, also was high scorer with 18 points. The season ended with Rocky Mount holding an 8-10 won-lost record.
