Grads Make Final Preparations
For Commencement Programs

As ihe time fcr graduation ap
proaches, local seniors, as sen
iors everywhere, are making final,
frantic preparations for their Bac
calaureate and Graduation ex
ercises, May 26 and Ma;j 31.
Hulda Willilains and Luanne
Hobbs, chaLrmen of the .two com
mittees, have planned the pro
grams for the Baccalaureate ser
mon and ithe Graduation exercises,
fcoith integral parts of a senior’s
last week in high school.
Dr. A. D. Wenger To Speak
The Baccalaureate Committee
led by Hulda Williams has ac-
qiiired Di’. Arthur D. Wenger,
president of Atlantic Christian
College, -to deliver the sennon
for the Baccalaureate Service at
5 o’clock Sunday afternoon in the
Senior High Auditorium, May 26.
Assisting Dr. Wenger will be Rev
erend R. W. Turkelson, who will
give the invocation and benedic
tion, and Reverend Ira A. Kirk,
who will read the scripture and
offer the prayer.
The Graduation Committee
chairman, Luanne Hobbs, secured
Dll-. B. G. Childs of Duke os the
main speaker. Dr. Childs will be
assisted by Reverend Russell
Fleming, who will hand out the
Bibles to the graduates and give
the invocation and benediction.

Senioa- High Auditorium at 9 o’
clock Friday; night. May 31.
Larry Medford Chief Rlarshal
Lain-y Medford a junior, will
serve as oheif Marshal for boith
services and the other junior mem
bers of the National Honor Socie
ty will assist him.
The high school choir, directed
iby Mr. H. T. Parry, will sing two
selections at both execerises. The
band, fronted by Mi’. E. G. Black,
will also playi for both services.

For Annual Beauty Pageant
Eleven local seniors, according
to present information, are -the
possessors of scholarships, to col
leges in and of out of the state,
andi many other seniors have re
ceived awards and recognition on
their accomplis' r.ients.
Among recipic-itc of scliolarships
are Lee Newby, $330 at St. Mary’s
Junior College; Luanne Hoobs,
$500 yearly at St. Mary’s; Gail
Sutton, $200 at Peace College;
Robert Wyirme, $200 ait WaJce For
est College; Jackie Williams,
football scholarship of $300 at
Guilford College; Roger Starling,
football scholarship of $200 at
Chowan College; Adam Maples, a
full football scholarship to Lenior
Rhyne; and Don Harris, $1,000
Senior breakfast, vesper service,
a movie and a street dance coupl
ed with two hours of government
and civic study, in Rocky Mount
will make up an entertaining and
dielighltful Senior Day, Mondaiy
27.
Members of the Senior Day
Commitiee have devoted much
time these last two weeks in pre
paration of this memorable day,
whidi begins with breakfast ser
ved in the Ricks Hotel ballroom.
After breakfast elected mem
bers of the class wll go uptown and
take over certain officcs, includ
ing the job of mayor, for one

elected were Peggy Andrews, Judy
Capps, Charlotte Charmichael,
Clare Davenport, Bai-bara Davis,
Rachel Goodwin, Sylvia Lancas

and Robert Wynne.

ed $150 for the Junior Giuld

Leadersliip contest, Jean Edwards
received $100 in cash and a $25
Savings Bond. Ellen Joyner, Ed
ward Riner, and Jackie Williams
won $25 Savings Bonds as compe
titors in this contest. For sum-
miltting the best Civitan essay
Jean was awarded $200. Jo Dare
Williams received $200 as winner
of the Elks Outstanding Student
contest.

change student, will return to
Rocky Mount for a. few days in
July before beginning his home

Stanley Vaughan and John
Sturgess are the first two Eagle
Scouts of troop 239 to receive the
Eagle award. The awards were
made in the First Baptist Church
in the latter of April
Classmates Elect RM Grad
Judy Carr, a ’56 graduate of
Rocky Mount Senior High School,
has recently been elected by her
classmates as sec-’etary-treasurer
of the situdent bodyi at Peace Col
lege for the year of ’57-’58.
Boys Travel to Europe
Allen Ci'onenburg was selected
by the American Field Service to
represent his country, state and
school by serving as a foreign ex
change student in Germany this
summer.
Allen is not the cnlyj Rocky
Mount resident traveling abroad
this summer: Jerry Daley along
(with his family and Roger Gregory
and his parents leave for Europe
around the first of June.
Beauty Pageant time is here
again and a secret committee of
the Junior Cham,ber of Commerce
issued invitatons last week Ito
sisteen RMSHS girls -to enter the
contest for the annual “Miss Rocky
Mount” Pageant June 5.

Nat’l Convention
Bill Stancil, state president of
ithe Junior Classical League, will
attend: -the Ntiional convention in
Colorado Springs, Colorado, Au
gust 11-15.
Bill, who was elected to the
state presidency in early February,
will serve as an official delegate
from the N. C. Junioi- Classical
League. One-half of his expenses
will be defrayed by the state or
ganization.
Accompanying Bill wll be three
other members of ithe local JCL
chapter who will also serve as de
legates. These are Mary Brent
Elmore, Nancy Coggins and
Henry Waters.
North Carolina is sending a total
of sixteen delegates of which four
will come from Rocky Mount.
Yelverton of the Junior Cham
ber of Commerce announced that
approximately 25 local girls re
ceived invitations. As of now it
is not known liow many of the
Senior High “beauties” will be
able to accept.
Girls wll be judged on beauty,
talent, intelligence, and person
ality. Before the couiLt.st. shere
will be a dinner for all contes
tants, and at (this time they will
be judged on poise.
Talent to be displayed by the
entries may, be singing, dramatic
I'eadings, dancing, insitniment
playing, dress designing, painting,
or other special talent a gu’l might
have.
Contestants must appear in both
evening dresses and baAhing suits.
Prizes of the local winner include
a baithing suit, a street ensemble,
gift certificates from maixyi Rocky
Mount merchants, plus a bouquet
of flowers and a trophy. She will
also receive an expense-paid trip
to Bui'lington for the Miss North
Carolina Contest. July 11-13.
Pasty McAuley won the local
contest last y/err. “Miss North
Cai'olina of ’56”, Joan Melton of
Albermarle, is one of the judges
of the local girls this year.
Anyone may attend the judging
in the Senior High auditorium,
June 5, by paying fifty cents.
