Locals Win Two; Lose One To Durham in Conference Durham Bulldogs, guests in the locals opening conference game, stomped the Birds 58-40 as Hay wood Evans, forward, led the scoring with points, January 3. Bulldogs, who usually play a zone, pulled a surprise by press ing from the opening whistle. Score at the half was 28-12. Birds Thrash Goldsboro Birds traveled to Goldsboro for their second conference game of the season and thrashed the Earthquakes 80:54, as six play ers hit in double figures for the locals, January 7. Quakes, trying to hold Evans who still collected 18 points) down, forgot about the other cagers as Roland Parker hit 15, Bob Moore 12, Russ Clack 11, Jim mie Parker 10, and Ed Dunn 10. RM Stomps Fayetteville Locals stomped Fayetteville’s Bulldogs to the tune of 50-26 as Evans again led the Black and Gold scoring with 22 points in the third conference game of the sea son for the cagers. January 10. Blackbirds were never headed. They showed an air-tight defense and and offense that sparkled on occasion. Greenville, Henderson Edged RM edged Greenville 55-52 for CITIZENS COAL SUPPLY CO. Phone: 6-8116 her fourth straight non-conference victory! as Haywood Evans lead the Bird scoring here, December 17. A fired-up Henderson squad lost a thriller to the Birds, 48-46, in a game which went into over time. This was the last non-con ference game of the season. Paul Eilers Makes FB All-Prep Team Paul Eilers, senior tackle, has been notified of his selection to the National All-Prep football team. Eilers made the All-State team as a guard in 1956 but failed to attain it this year as a tackle because, some say, the won-lost record of the Birds was not out standing. East-West all-star football game will put Eilers into action this summer. He was presented the Center Theater’s “Most Valu able Player Award”, after a vote of his teammates, by Mr. Martin Street, manager of the theater. When asked what his future plans are, Paul said, “I hope to first go to Stanton Prep School and then to Carolina.” Cagers Go to Wilmington For AAA Tilt Tomorrow Ending the first half of conference play, local cagers travel to the Port City of Wilmington tomorrow to play the Wildcats in an important AAA tilt. Coach Leon Brogden of Wilmington usually possesses a powerhouse as is shown by his teams coming out as State Champions in the past two seasons. With eight returning seniors they haven’t lost a game this year and have beaten, among others, the South Carolina cham pions, Camden, 78-42, and Durham, 40-37. In the last six games of this The Dim View by Russell Clack Haywood Evans Reaches Spot 3 In League Race That RM’s star forward, Hay wood Evans, with a 20.3 average is in third place in the race for scoring honors in the Eastern A- AA Conference was announced by the Eastern AAA Conference Sportswriters Association. Roman Gabriel of Wilmington leads the league with a torrid 26.5 average, althougli Evans has scored the most points, 61. Evans also leads in free throws taken and made with 27 of 39 and is se cond in rebounding with 32, only two behind Gabriel. The Sportswriters Association is made up of sports writers in the conference cities. Figures given are thi'ough the week ending January 10. Two RM games, Wilson and Raleigh, are not included. Durham, with speed and height, looms as the team to beat this year. (The same can be said of Wilmington.) Although the Birds lost to the Bulldogs by eighteen points, most of the squad think they can beat Durham if they have a good night. . . Big John Key, Durham’s 6-7 center, blocked about 20 RM points. Our boys just couldn’t get used to the towering All-State candidate. Credit is due to the “unknown” men in the Blackbird cage pic ture, the managers and the statis tician. The managers are sopho mores Eugene Cherry, Ronnie Weaver, and Jimmy Wheeler. Without them the squad would be lost. They are the boys who do all the “little things” for the squad. They have the same hours and work as hard as the team. Senior Dan Robbins is the team statistician. This is his second year of sitting on the bench at games and busily, writing down all the errors the squad makes. His experienced eyes see and chart down such things as bad passes, fumbles, traveling violations, per sonal fouls, double dribbles, and three — second violations. For this reason he is a helpful and needed member of the team. Josh Sulluck’s BARBECUE Pit CooKed Barbecue Cokey Road This neiw ruling on football extra points is stirring up much controversy among the college coaches. The ruling, conversion which gives two points for passes and runs and the regular one point for kicks, will certainly make the game wide open. “The Peoples Bank’ MHBB BANKandTRUST COMPANY Eastern Carolina’s Most Complete Stock Of Toys SPORTING GOODS JOYNERS’ Spoi tsmen’s Headqiiarter* Bunting, Hardy & Minges Manhattan Tab Collar Stripped Dress Shirts $5.00 Draines Barber Shop Across From The Senior High School Carolyn Harper ALMAND’S Rocky Mount’s Exclusive Drnjr Store Soda Fountain Luncheonette Rexall Spread That Tip Top Feeling Ward Baking Company Ernestine Barnes ROYAL CLOTHING COMPANY series RM has won only^ two, with the last coming in the i 955-56 sea son when Harold Gilbert, Don Stallings, and Company slid thr- c’jgh with a 58-53 victory.
