Holding offices has been the ma jor part of Charlotte’s past. She served as secretary of the sopho more class and has held many homeroo'm offices. She won the coveted Padereski music award for being able to play ten different pieces in ten conse cutive years in the national audi tions, which was presented to her last year at the annual awards day. National Honor Society men- ber, .editor of the H'i-Noc-Ar, and cabinet member are just a few rr.ore of her many actvities. Parents, students and teachers all over America joined together in observing Education Week, with “Praise and Appraise Your Schools” as its main theme, during the week of November 8-14. Each day during American Edu cation Week, articles pertaining to topics essential to school life were WTitten by various teacjiers from the Rocky Mount City Schools and printed in the local newspaper. Top ics included: The Child, The Peo ple Next Door, The School Board Thf* Adult- nHJ^pno and The Voter. Mrs. Nancy Gorham, an English and World history teach er at Senior High’s Night School, wrote an article on “The Adult Citizens: How Can The Schools Serve Them?” as Senior High’s contribution. E. C. A. in Goldsboro, N. C. on Wednesday, November 4. Following a greeting given by the Goldsboro Chamber of Com merce, Cliri.s Gillars, president of the Rocky Mount Disti'ibutive Edu- Six Semi-finalists Chosen Nannie Hussey, Bill Parker, Gar ry Garris, Mayo Stancil, Tommy Baysden, and Alice Kovarco have been chosen as semi-finalists out of 20 applicants for tihe American Field Service summer program from Rocky Mount. Susan Harris, chairman of the Foreign Exchange Committee, talk ed to the junior class about apply ing for the opportunity to go abroad this summer as a foreign exchange student under the American Field Service program. Mrs. H. L. Faulkner, past president of the Foreign Exchange Committee of Rocky Mount, Mr. Dudley Harper head of Foreign Field Service, Mr’ C. M. Edson, Miss Dorothy Craighll, Ralph Williams, Frannie Harrison, and Susan Harris were all present to interview the students. Soon r.fter the interview with tlie twenty npplicants, six semi-finalists were chosen, Eva Berg, this year’s ex change student from Sweden, tlien interviewed the six students. Ti.iese semi-finalists are now com peting for the final selection. They aj-e writing a description of the most memorable moment n their lives, a typical school day, and summer day, and a complete des cription of their family and home. This is turned in and sent to New York to an AFS screening commit tee. In a jol> application contest, Jerry Wayne Blankenship placed second witdi his demonstration of a job in terview. Representing the Senior High D. E. Club at the meeting were Roger Barnes, Curtis Pelt, Micky RobWns, Woody Herrington, jerry Wayne Blankenship, jerry Smith, MotUs Reams, Billy Fuller, Chris GiUars, Belva Johnson, Betty Jean Maley, Alvanell Martin, Russell Carroll, Billy Hunt, Bobby Perkins, Jerry Parker, Mike Howell, and Mrs. K'unt. Senior Girl Reigns Over Homecoming On Unlucky Day Patsy Warren, Campus Sweet heart, Homeroom lie’s float, and THE BLACKBIRD staff all receiv ed honors Friday, November 13th., Kn unlucky day for most people. Patsy was crowned Campus Sweetheart at the halftime by Wil ma Shearin, head majorette. Pat sy who is head cheerleader, had aa her runners-up, Margaret Carmi chael and Jenny Tyner. At the dance Patsy was crowned again by Double Snow and Mike Lundy, co-captains of the varsity football team. In the homecoming parade there were six winners in the two ca- tagories of originality and beauty from wihich the floats and cars were judged. The first place win ner for originality was Miss Doro thy Craighill’s homeroom, 116, with the theme, “There’ll be a hot time in the old town tonigiht.” Wildlife Ciub place second and honorable mention went to the HI-NOC-AR staff. The winner in beauty was THE BLACKBIRD with the theme ‘THE BLACKBIRD — A tribute to the school.” Second place was awarded to tihe Good Sports chib with honorable mention going to the Cheerleaders’ car. Prizes of fered were $5.00 and $2.50 given by the Service club which sponsored the pai-ade. Journalism Class Participates In Tuberculosis Essay Contest Members of the journalism class have been working on essays, edi torials, and poems about T. B. for tl'.e Twenty-Thhd Annual Press Project whicih is sponsored by the National Tuberculosis Association and the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. Subjects under which the articles coiiUl be written are ‘Our School in the Fight Against T. B.’ and ‘K'ealth in Our Own Community.’ Students had a choice of either of tlies€ subjects for their project. Aims of the project were to make the student aware of his respon sibilities to health and his neigh bors, to encourage responsible citi zenship, and to raise the standard of school journalism. Rules for this project are that only student-staffed and edited publications for senior high schools are eligible, entries shall consist of one or more issues of a duplica ted publication issued at regular intervals during the school year, and entries shall contain articles cn one of the assigned subjects. These entries are sent to the local tuberculosis association. These articles will be judged by a member of the Tuberculosis As sociation. Judging will be based on accuracy, originality, journalistic style, evidence of researcih, ant^ un derstanding of the subject ir Certificates of Honor are to the publications wh‘ the aims of the project articles will go on t- the state contest.
