Hot and Cold In the season’s opener, Kinston’s junior varsity defeaJted the Baby- birds, 33-30. Greenville dropped tiheir grame, 35-34, on a wnong-g'oal layup. Kinsiton won their second tilt with BM, 43-38. ^Beginning the play with future Eastern' 4-A opponents, the Baby birds won games with Fayetteville, 51-42, and Goldsboro, 43-27. The Babybirds tihen began to sUp as they dropped three afcraighit games to Durlham, 48-42; Raleig-h, 53-43; and Payelbbeville, 50-32. Durham Takes Win In a balbtle for first place of the Eastern Oonference, Durham sur vived a rally by the ’Binds and pasted a 49-44 viobory. Hie Black birds scored nine stiraighit points to tie the score at 42-42, but the BuflJidlogs pulled ah'eiad again to win the game. Taljbobt and Ricky Creech carried the bulk of the scoring load. Woodiside of Durham was high fOr both teams in scoring. Baleigh was tlie vioUm of Rocky Mount’s bounce back into their form. Talbott, Cretech, and Parrish led the 63-38 onslaught witli a consitiant bamag© of field goals and free throws. The outcome was never in doubt as the Blackbirds began early bo sink tlieir shots with dead ly acouraicy. Fayetteville Falls The ’Birds took their second vic tory at the expense of Fayetteville, 64-49. Rocky Mount led through- ouit in a game marred by frequent fouiling by both teams. Neverthe less, the ’Birds were again hot from the floor and couldn’t be stopped. Creech, Parrish, Dunn, and Tal bott scored in double figures for the winners as Jordian scored high for the Bulldlogs. Wilson’s tough zone defense and their sharp eye from outside kept them aheiad unltil the final minutes when the Blackbii-ds went aliead to win, 52-44, Ricky Creech hilt for 16 points while Dunn and Talbott popped the nets for 11 each.
