Teachers Choose Two Seniors To Attend Wildacres Resort Nestled snuggly in the lofty -junjains of North Carolina is a smalT resort calleci WUdacres. Each year two students from Rocky Mount Senior High School are privileged to make the trip to this mountain resort. Sylvia Hutto and Steve Cherry were chosen by the teachers last year to be dele gates to Wildacres. This year Judy Felton and Hilton Barrett are the l-jcky ones. When most people hear the name Wildacres, they think of a barren, desokite land in the middle of no where. Actually Wildacres is a mountaintop resort owned by Mr. and Mrs. I. D. Blumenthal of Ash- ville who have their summer home near the camp. The Civitan clubs of North Caro lina usually sponsor delegates from their respective towns. The camp site is made up of a hotel, buUt entirely from natural raw materials, ever the beds are hued out of rough wood, a cafe teria, canteen, auditorium, and craft house. Each day a subject in the area of Human Relations is considered and studied. Five different topics are discussed, some otf the most interesting are Inter-Faith, Adult- Youth, and Racial Relations. Commencement comes on the last night of the stay which is lUS’jaUy Friday, when the delegates receive certificates and a small gift from Mr. Blumenthal. After coming home, each dele gate wishes that he or she could return again to the land of cool streams and jagged peaks!! For the last honor of the year given by the Kiwanis Club to an outstanding senior, the Kiwanians pi selected Drew MHarrell as Kiwa- Unis Boy for May. ill In serving his * school, Drew has ™ i'"; Jiono exceptional- well. Last year Drew H. he was president of his Homeroom. This year, as President of the Service Club, Drew has worked very hard to carry out its functions, one of them be.ing to present the guest minis ters to the school during Easter week. As a sophomore, he represented his homeroom in the Student Or ganization and carried out his du ties so well that in his senior year. Drew was again selected as a dele gate to the Student Organization. To aid in the graduation exer cises, Drew is an active member of the Baccalaureate Committee. A desire to succeed in sports was as great a, challenge to Drew as the Desire to Excel in school. He has been a member of the football team since his sophomore year here at Senior High. Besides these extra-curricular activities, Drew finds time for Scouts. He is 3| member of Troop 5 in which he is an Eagle Scout, and has been presented the God and Country Award. An honor roll student, Drew has certainly proved his character and ability to succeed in the world of today. Beauty? — She’s got it. She has been a member of the Beauty Court for two years and a member of the National Honor Society. But Wait! Some people thought the Honor Society required brains, not beauty. Oh, well, beauty and brains are only two outstanding qualities of Judy Kinche loe, this month’s II Rotary Girl. Judy /is Chairman of ^ *t h e Elections ® Committee, a, . ' ' n^ember of the Judy K. President’s Cab inet, and is an AFS Semi-finalist. She will be attending Salem Col lege next year. These are only a few of her accomplishments at Senior High. Show on Radio Station WCEC, the Dig Station every afternoon”. Says Mike Warner, our Rotary Boy of the month. Mike has also been Kiwanis Boy of the Month, is a member of the National Honor Socicty, and is now Assistant Edi tor of the Blackbird. Mike’s wil- ingness to serve his school is shown through |ii: the many activi ties in which he|^| participates in.|||| Vice-Presidcnt oi. ~ the Senior Class, Mike W. “Listen to the Mike Warner President of the Phalanx Club, and President of the Youth Council, arc only a few responsible posi tions he holds. Mike was accepted at Duke Uni versity in the early admission plan during his junior year. He is thought of by all who know him as interesting, pleasant, and in dustrious.
