All conference and all-state last year as a junior, Talbott is known for his terrific pssing ability, while his football tal ents are also outstanding ^n the kicking, defensive, and running fields. Pitt, who was out most of last season due to an in jury, is the speed demon on the Blackbird squad. Quick is no. 2 quarterback. Halfback Pitt is a 165- pounder and from his past re cords, the flashy ball carrier should be among the leading backs in the conference. Quick should help the ’Bird’s running attack, along with being the no. 2 signal caller. After Talbott, Pitt and Quick Carpenter has junior fullback Wayne Daughtridge and prom ising sophomore Darrell John son and Digit Laughtridge. Other leading backfield hopefulls are junior Steve Kel ly, junior Ivan Bunn, senior Russell Hall, senior Buddy Elmore, junior Mike Branch, junior Bill Bonner and senior Robert Bridges. The Rocky Moiuit High School Blackbirds, who came so close to becoming the North Carolina state 4-A football champs last year, may have decided to make this the year to go into the Rocky Mount foot ball records. Rocky Mount, which raft up a brilliant 8-1-1 record last year only to lose in the state semi-finals, has made a ter rific start this year to improve that record and become the state champs as they opened their 1962 football season In Henderson Fridey night, Jsweep- ing a 21-0 victory over the Henderson Bulldogs behind the flashy running of senior half back ace Wrennie Pitt. Pitt who lettered last year, although out most of the sea son because of injuries, raced across the goal line for all three Rocky Mount touchdowns Friday night in runs of 34 yards and 17 yards and a 12 yard pass play from quarter back Danny Talbott. Pitt’s flashy running set up most of his tounchdown runs a? the senior star refused to be stopped by the Henderson linemen. Rocky Mount coach Chris Carpenter used his entire squad in taming the Bulldogs, as his three offensive backfields ground out 268 yards, while his aerial attack was good for 57 yeards. Team Captain Talbott, who was all-state quarterback last year, enjoyed a fine night com pleting four passes in six at tempts, and was also a running star along with teammate Pitt. Blackbirds Have Fine looking Forward Wall For '62 Season Before any team can come up with a good football team, a strong line is ’needed and the Rocky Mount Senior High School Blackbirds seem to have just that kind of line. Rocky Mount’s forward wall will not be loaded with weight, but the Birds will field a fast, experienced line that should stir up problems for the Rocky Mount challengers, both of fensively and defensively. The Birds have 10 lettermen linemen returning and every one of them were starters at one time durig last season, either on offense or defense. End seems to be the squad’s strongest point as it is loaded with four lettermen. Junior Billy Warren and senior Dennis Newell give the Birds two fine pass receivers, while senior Marion Barnes and senior Tom Parrish will handle most of the defensive end problems. Other ends that should see action are senior Bob Sides, juniors Brent Milgrom and Skip Thompson, and senior Butch Ferguson. Company 118 S. Washington St Established 1902 Nash Brick Company, Inc.
