PAGE—FOUR THE BLACKBIRD, ROCKY MOUNT SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1962 Campaign Brings Unusual Incidents (Editor’s Note: During the recent subscription campaign, many interesting and humorous incidents occured. Following are a few that were reported). Several nice looking sopho more girls were casually sv/ing- ing down the hall when Mike Floyd, a happy-go-lucky genial BLACKBIRD seller approach ed the girls. Before Mike could even open his mouth, one girl handed him $1.25 for a BLACK BIRD subscription. How did he do it? Maybe it’s that Alfred E. Neuman smile ha is always wearing; it does something to girls. When asked of Leroy Savage why he didn’t buy a BLACK BIRD subscription, he said, “I didn’t like the article on Egor.” While Dell Harris was des perately pleading with her as signed homeroom to buy a subscription, Marilyn Spencer, a senior member sitting in the room, leaned over and collect ed $1.25 from Ruth Ward. One intelligent boy, after constant nagging from a senior member, finally broke down and consented to sign a promis sory note. He signed it “John Doe.” /zcuniNGpooii WITH CARLTON EDWARDS The elephants and the ants were having a lootball game. One of the ants got the ball and made a dash for the goal. Galloping across to stop him, an elephant put his foot on the ant and killed him. The crowd hissed, booed, and threw bottles, and the referee came running to reprimand him. •‘Aw shucks.” said the ele phant, I only wanted to trip him.” Don’t push a junior down the stairs. Or kick his teeth in un awares. Or with a hammer bash his bean— We want to keep our build ing clean. Did ycu know that the Ser vice Club sells programs and raises the flag at all home foot ball games that pocket- sized, papar-backed books of all kinds for both students and teachers are being sold in the library? that after each winning game a burial of the Teacher Leaves Her Shoes At Home One of our esteemed though forgetful teachers was work ing after school with some students one day, when she suddenly remembered that she had an appointment with a woman at her home. She promised she would be gone only a few minutes, although those present knew she was tired, after a hard day’s work. Arriving at her home, she got her business straight, kick ed off her shoes, lay down on the sofa, and promptly dozed ofi'. After a few minutes, some thing, maybe her conscience, stirred her. 1 Regaining her seases, she hurried out of the house, jump ed in her Buick convertible, stepped on the gas, and felt something cold on her foot! She was too blocks away before she realized that she had left her shoes beside the sofa. Luckily, she had a pair in the car or she may have come to school bare-footed. Some times teachers can be unpre dictable, you know. A. F. Comer Hwy. 97 East GI 6-4191 If No Answer Dial GI 2-2226 Rocky Mount Lanes Restaurant Open 24 Hours 301 By-Pass North Rocky Mount, N. C. Armies of pick-up trucks, jeeps and just about any thing with wheels brought materials to the bonfire area. What did the bonfires con sist of?—scraps from old torn- down houses, chicken crates, boxes of trash, dummy foot ball players, hay, pepsi-cola crates, wood, and any piece of trash that would burn, Bruce Lea, acting head of the committee for the sopho more class, expressed his re gret about last week’s unex pected pep rally. “I think it showed lack of clear thinking and was just someone trying to pull a prank. No one in the Sophomore Class thinks it’s funny, nor do many other stu dents.” Bruce felt sure that if the Sophomore bonfire had gone off as scheduled it would have been the biggest in the history of Senior High. When Eddie Allen, President of the Senior class was asked his opinion of the Senior bon fire he said, “I thought we did real well, considering that we had only two days to gather the materials. I want to thank everyone for helping.” President of the Junior Class, David. Parker expressed his viaw of the Junior bonfire as “beneficial to the students and spirit of the school.” Josh Bulluck's Barbecue Pit Cooked Barbecue Cokey Rd. Daughtridge Paint and Wallpaper Co.
