Darkness descended upon the five shortly after 7:30 and the motors had to be cut off. Skipper got in a fast stream cf water, broke loose from the other boats, and was soon out of sight around a bend. After a few frightful moments, he per in the canoe. I’ve found a bridge.” Eventually reaching the bridge, the boats were pulled under it onto dry land. After eating and resting for a few minutes, they walked down the road and soon saw a light in the distance. Clad only in bathing trunks, the five Senior High students walked up to the Hollywood Drive-In Restaurant in Tarboro, went in (despite the noise caused by the horns of a crowd of Tarboro teen-agers), and got themselves something to eat. By this time, it was alter nine o’clock. Scared that they might be robbed, they returned to the boats at two o’clock. Shortly after settling down to try to get some sleep, they were startled by two men who drove up in a car, got out, and began walking around. Because they couldn’t seem to get around too well and were out so late the boys deduced that they were drunk. Also they had to duck a few bottles and cans, which firmly con vinced them that they should remain out of sight, although the odds were five to two for them. After what seemed like hours and hours, the two men left and the boys relaxed. At last they settled off to a long- awaited sleep. o — Fountain Radio And TV Service 244 S.
