WEDNESDAY. OCTOBER 3. 1962 THE BLACKBIRD, ROCKY MOUNT SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Pa^fiE-SEYEN Figments Sonny Liston convinced the last of the. Patterson fans that Jie is the better boxer. He may 'have shown them, too con vincingly, for Comisky Park was not nearly filled this time and next time, wherever it may be, there probably won’t be as many as then. That could cost Liston a million or two ($$). Floyd Patterson never satisfied men in the profession that he was as good as his title. His manager has protected him aU along from tough fights, accounting for his “fine re cord”. If -you think Liston is invincible, watch for his in evitable bout with Cassias Glay. It’s World Series time again and once more the New York Yankees have captured the Pick The Winners; Win Five Dollars Do you want five dollars? If you do, pit your mind against this matter. The Los Angales Dodgers predicted from the first of the season to win the Senior Loop flag, did an almost impossible final week plupge, and wound up in a playoff with the San Francisco Giants. Both teams have ex citing ballplayers and the ex perts are' putting the winner of the NL playoff over the Yankees. Only time will tell. Sandy Koufax will hold the key to tlie Dodgers’ hopes, both in the playoffs and in the World Series. This could be one of the few times in history that the odds- makers wiU not favor the Yanks. The categories that they are first in are especially offensive to their opponents, as they are total offense and rushing of fense. The total offensive aver age is 303.3 yards; the rushing offense average is 261 yards; and the difference in total of- fenees is 159 yards. Coach C. V. Lundy is adding to my “bookie” sideline. He has offered a season’s pass to all Rocky Mount athletic con tests for this year to the first p^on that submits the cor rect winners of the Eastern 4-A games to be played this weekend, including the margin of victory by eight points. Schedule Seems Rough For Birds For Last Games The Eastern 4-A Conference appears to be as well balanced as it has been in recent years. Raleigh, Rocky Mount, and Fayetteville are the leading contenders for the conference crown. Goldsboro has a fine team but, having lost twice, they must be counted out of the race; however, they may play the role of spoiler. Rocky Mount is now in the midst of five straight con ference games. This Friday, the Blackbirds face their most important clash of the season, meeting the Fayetteville Bull dogs. The game should be a defensive struggle as Fayette ville has allowed only seven points per game and RM has allowed 4.5 points per game. Fayetteville leads the confer ence in both rushing defense and total defense. After Fayetteville, Wilson comes to Rocky Mount to con tinue their personal fued for the Shelton Looms Trophy. Wilson is possibly the weakest team in the conference, but the intense rivalry between the schools must be reckoned with. The following .Friday, the Blackbirds journey to Durham in another critical game. Dur ham gave the number one team in the state a stiff battle last Friday before falling 7-0, the touchdown coming on a pass Interception. Although it has lost one conference game now it can not be completely count ed out of the race. The last two regular season games, of the year will be tough ones for the Birds as they pltiy the number one and the number two teams in the state. All-»round quarterback, Jeff Bever, leads the Myers Park Mustangs against th’ Blackbirds, hoping to get some measure of revenge for last year’s 21-18 loss. Raleigh, de fending state champions, lost their first game of the year but have improved steadily. The Raleigh offense features the talented running of Austol Youmans, who played a big part in the Capitals’ 21-0 tri umph over Rocky Mount last season.
